Films are made in prep!

I know that I go a little overboard when it comes to prep, but I see so many problems with #filmmaking that could have been fixed if they had preped. #FIlmsAreMadeInPrep.

Filmmaking is a complex and #collaborative process that requires a significant amount of #planning and #preparation before the cameras start rolling. While the allure of jumping into #production and capturing the magic on set can be tempting, it's essential to remember that #films are made in #preproduction. In fact, one of the main reasons first-time filmmakers fail is because they don't put enough time, energy, and budget into this crucial stage of the filmmaking process.

Preproduction is the stage where you lay the foundation for your film. It's where you take your #script and turn it into a visual #story that can be captured on camera. This involves everything from scouting locations and casting actors to creating storyboards and/or shotlisting and designing costumes... Each department head plays a critical role in this stage, and it's essential to spend time working with each of them to ensure that your vision for the film is as clear as possible, and everyone knows what the goal is.

One of the primary benefits of investing in preproduction is that it allows you to identify and solve problems before they occur. By taking the time to plan and prepare, you can anticipate potential roadblocks and come up with solutions that will save you time and money in the long run. For example, if you're shooting on location and need to deal with a noisy environment, you can take steps to mitigate the sound issues before you arrive on set. Similarly, if you're working with a limited budget, you can brainstorm creative solutions that will help you achieve your vision without breaking the bank.

Another critical aspect of preproduction is creating a collaborative environment. When you take the time to work with each department head and ensure that everyone is on the same page, you create a culture of collaboration that can help you achieve your goals. A lack of communication and clarity of vision will tank a production quickly. When everyone is working towards a common goal, it's much easier to make decisions and pivot when necessary. This can be especially important when working on independent films, where resources may be limited, and each team member may be taking on multiple roles.

In summary, preproduction is a critical stage of the filmmaking process that should not be overlooked. It's where you lay the foundation for your film and work with each department head to create a collaborative environment that can help you achieve your goals. By investing time, energy, and budget into this stage, you can identify and solve problems before they occur, create a shared vision, and ultimately increase your chances of success as a first-time filmmaker. Remember, films are made in prep, and if you want to make a great film, you need to put in the time and effort to make sure everything is in place before you start filming.
