Filmmaking With Young People
I always enjoy working with young filmmakers and actors and have done since I was a youthworker before I trained in film. As a young youthworker starting out I was amazed to find lots of (VHS) video cameras not being used by the club let alone the young people it was meant for, mainly because no-one knew how to use them. I had a quick read of the instructions and we soon had lots of fun introducing the teenagers to animation and music videos. Today's teens are much more tech savvy and only need about 30 seconds of instruction to get the gist of the basics.
The last two weeks I've been working with a group based in a theatre so we had the advantage of a great set with and some truly excellent characterisation. They covered issues such as overcoming the status quo and poked fun at promotional videos, something I could do with showing some clients! As usual the ideas flowed fast and furious and I wished we had about 3 months and a ￡20k budget to do their ideas justice, but then innovation and new ideas often come from necessity so the time spent is never wasted. Next stop the edit suite!
