A Film and a Talk at the Briscoe Center of American History at the University of Texas, Austin
This week the Briscoe Center of American History at the University of Texas/ Austin reopens after a major renovation. I was invited to participate in a conversation for the reopening about memorialization in the context of a statue of Jefferson Davis that was removed from UT in 2015.
Rather than risk my audience falling asleep I made a 7 minute film with the help of my son Andrei about this very subject having made so many statues/ sculptures.
The film - Lest We Forget/ Statues of Limitation will be screened on Friday and then I'll see if I can't find a way to post it or a link to it.. Surprisingly enough, it's not about making "statues" but about their removal.
At the present time there are still app. 1,500 major monuments to the Confederacy that still stand to say nothing of the schools and highways that maintain their namesakes in the Confederacy.
The Briscoe Center is a great repository of American History in numerous collections and I urge anyone visiting Austin to visit.

7 年Ivan, interesting topic on so many levels: how times change social values which in turn reveals whom, we the public, celebrate, and/ or later denigrate, or vise-versa. And then to know that there 1,500 major monuments to the Confederacy that still stand to say nothing of the schools and highways that maintain their namesakes in the Confederacy is such an amazing fact and a great reveal of the cultural divide that that still exists the USA.
