Filling a New Position

Filling a New Position

THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN THIS ARTICLE ARE SOLELY THOSE OF THE AUTHOR.

Many people, myself included, have applied for, been offered, and accepted a job offer to fill a newly created position. To those with whom I have spoken, we all seem to have had the same thought: It will look great on the resume to be able to say/write that we built something from nothing. It's an extremely enticing prospect. But it can be fatal.

No, it will not kill you or your career, but it can be a setback. In my case, it was the first blemish on my resume. I had previously stayed with employers for years. I thought it would be a problem. It wasn't. Turns out, then and now, that most people have had one or two short-term jobs. It only becomes a problem if there is a pattern.

But that's not the issue. The issue for today is: How can a job applicant know how risky it is to take on and be the first to hold a newly created position?

The answer is: Ask questions. You have to know how the new position will fit into the company's organizational chart. What impact will it have on those below and above the position? Whose budget does the new position impact the most? And which department will benefit the most from the position?

The last two questions spelled my doom. I was paid by one department, but another was the beneficiary of my work. Moreover, my immediate supervisor did not want to supervise the position. How do I know that it wasn't personal against me? Simple: When I left, the position was never filled.
