Filling the gap ...
One way of looking at any enterprise is from a gap-filling perspective ...
The products or services of the enterprise are designed to:
- meet a need that can be seen as a gap in the customer portfolio of assets, consumables, services or experiences
- fill a gap in the market / environment in which they operate
The business strategy, a combination of market strategy and corporate strategy, is created to:
- determine the capabilities needed by the enterprise to realise its goals and aspirations, and in so doing, identifying capability gaps in the enterprise
- outline the transformation roadmap for addressing capability gaps, whether these be missing capabilities or capabilities requiring strengthening and maturing
The annual business and operational plan or business unit plan is created to:
- provide clarity in relation to the accomplishments sought in the forthcoming year, and in so doing identifies the areas in which activity, both operational and transformational, will address gaps in capability, output and performance
The learning and development plans for each individual are established to:
- identify and support the ongoing development of each individual, balancing individual and enterprise goals, and strengthening and redressing gaps in their skills and competencies
Future aspirations
Each time we describe something in future terms, by default, we are describing the gap between the present and future state.
Each time we take a step towards realising our future goals and aspirations, we are filling the gap between our present and future, as individuals and as enterprises.
