Figs and Relationships

I love gardening. I have always had plants. There is something about nurturing them, watching them grow, and with fruits and vegetables, enjoying the harvest.

A little over 8 years ago I won a little fig tree at a county fair. I didn’t know anything about figs, except that I didn’t really love Fig Newtons. But it was a free tree, so I was going to plant it.

I did a little bit of research on the conditions it would need to thrive and into the ground it went.? After 2 years, this is what it looked like.

I was pleased. It was producing some fruit. A manageable amount of fruit to have some fresh figs for myself and share the bounty with friends and family.

It is enormous, and I am making fig jams and frozen figs and fig meals as fast as I can. Friends, neighbors and relatives are also enjoying my figs.

Things grow and thrive when they are given care. All of my plants have taught me that. They don’t need constant attention. They need some water, some fertilizer now and then. Some pruning. And they give back so much more than they require.

Our relationships are like this also. And we all know that having relationships and connections are important for our social and mental health. Relationships require care. They thrive when we take the time to connect, to reach out, to be there for a friend. When you get that sweet comment of thanks, or a thoughtful note, it makes you smile.

Don’t take your relationships for granted. They are sweeter than Fig Newtons, and they can keep growing.
