The Fight Has Only Just Begun

Dear Luminaries,

As the Founder and CEO of a company that was created to advance women and accelerate gender equity, a company that has built a community of thousands of women and males allies aligned in our mission, and a company that employs women, I am devastated by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Since our inception in 2019, Luminary has remained politically agnostic. We welcome all views, all backgrounds, all opinions and we encourage our community to take part in the political process; however, we cannot, or rather I cannot, sit by and not address Friday’s decision and the ripple effect it will likely have on our country, on society and for generations to come. For some of you reading this, you may not agree with our/my stance and that is your right to disagree.

This decision will impact all of our lives, not just women and girls, but all genders and the precedent this will set in our country is devastating for all underrepresented and marginalized communities. This decision will impact our workforce and our economy for generations to come. Just like we need equal pay for equal work, as well as equal opportunities, women need access to reproductive health care. How can we look at our daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, godchildren, grandchildren and tell them we have equity for women in any way? Losing access to reproductive health care is the first of many dominoes to fall. This goes beyond reproductive rights, this will impact every business, every household, every state where women don’t have access. The economic losses to be suffered are astronomical, when we are already losing $105B annually from existing restrictions. We are all at risk.

As stated by one our Luminary Members,?Janna Meyrowitz Turner,?“taking bodily autonomy and personal rights away from 51%+ of the population – that meaningfully contributes to society in both paid and unpaid labor and makes over 85% of household purchasing decisions – is a humanitarian and economic crisis in the United States that the entire world is paying attention to. ‘Whatever the exact scope of the coming laws,’ the dissenting justices wrote, ‘one result of today’s decision is certain: the curtailment of women’s rights, and of their status as free and equal citizens.’”?

Friday’s decision is just the beginning. Where does it stop? Our individual rights are at risk from birth control, IVF/fertility, voting rights, gay marriage, interracial marriage, gun laws, and privacy to name a few. Please be informed and use your voices. We can make a difference.
