The fight for clean air

How we can all play a role to curb air pollution

Over the last few decades, increasing air pollution around the world has contributed to numerous problems to our planet’s ecosystems and the health of all living beings that inhabit them. It goes without saying that the biggest (or should we say, only) culprit has been human beings, with every other species being on the receiving end of our so-called intelligence that has fueled harmful technological developments.

We all know how crucial it is to fight air pollution. And with enough effort, each one of us can make a difference.

The following are four ways you can contribute to the ongoing struggle for cleaner air.

Working from home

COVID-19 has been a blessing for nature and literally every other species than humans. Lockdowns across the world resulted in steep declines in pollution as an immediate after effect of human activities coming to a standstill. In many countries - animal, plant, and insect life flourished in their former homes that humanity encroached on. In short, as humans were confined inside of their own homes, life outside got a much needed chance to flourish again.

Working from home is the best way to continue supporting nature for all the obvious reasons, the most significant being less pollution from vehicles.

Smoke

One of the most common indoor air pollutants is the smoke from cigarettes. In fact, research, experiments by Tobacco Control have suggested that cigarette smoke produces 10 times more air pollution than the exhaust from diesel cars.

Given that a significant part of the population smokes, it’s no surprise that the collective air quality of the planet suffers as a result. The solution is thus clear: stop smoking cigarettes. If not for personal health reasons, at least for the health of the air we breathe. And yes, this includes electronic cigarettes too!

Dispose of garbage properly

Haphazardly disposing garbage without any prior segregation not only contributes to foul smells, but also leads to a deterioration in air quality as well. This is especially true for waste that is thrown out in the open, which contaminates the air with extremely toxic substances. Some of these toxic substances include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. No points for guessing - they’re all deadly. A two-step solution to this problem is - A) Reducing the amount of waste generated by your household, and B) Segregating the generated waste properly. Adding to this, consciously adopting recycling habits goes a step further in eliminating the problem even before it takes shape.

Going paperless

At first thought, most of us may not associate paper with air pollution. But remember how paper is made in the first place - by cutting trees! And we all (should already) know that trees help keep the air clean.

Of course, directly using the paper itself isn’t going to make the air quality worse. However, it does put pressure companies to continue mass producing it. This inevitably means cutting more trees to meet our growing demands. With technology as powerful and efficient as it is today, we really shouldn’t be relying on paper unless we really have to.

The above are just some of the many practices we can adopt to play a part for cleaner air - which is something that we all want and need. Only together, can we really make a difference - a long lasting difference.

On the topic of air quality, we at Just Breathe are committed to making people breathe easier in a world that becomes increasingly polluted. Our nature inspired solutions fuel our stations that purify the indoor air in windowless office spaces.
