It is disheartening to observe the immense pressure and burden placed upon Black people to change the minds of racist individuals. The fact that they must be exceptionally skilled debaters even to be considered is a testament to the systemic inequalities that still pervade our society. This overwhelming expectation not only reinforces the idea that the responsibility for dismantling racism lies solely with the oppressed but also exposes Black individuals to triggering and traumatizing experiences.
Dr. King spoke about this in one of my favorite speeches.
“Whites, it must frankly be said, are not putting in a similar mass effort to reeducate themselves out of their racial ignorance. It is an aspect of their sense of superiority that the white people of America believe they have so little to learn. The reality of substantial investment to assist Negroes into the twentieth century, adjusting to Negro neighbors and genuine school integration, is still a nightmare for all too many white Americans…These are the deepest causes for contemporary abrasions between the races. Loose and easy language about equality, resonant resolutions about brotherhood fall pleasantly on the ear, but for the Negro there is a credibility gap he cannot overlook. He remembers that with each modest advance, the white population promptly raises the argument that the Negro has come far enough. Each step forward accents an ever-present tendency to backlash.”

It's evident that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words still hold true today. The onus of change should not be placed on the shoulders of those who have been marginalized and discriminated against. That we must be able to speak with a viral-video level of scholarly eloquence to be heard while maintaining the patients of Job not to trigger these bigots is infuriating to me. This burden can't be ours. It is crucial that allies actively participate in dismantling these systems of oppression by educating themselves, challenging their biases, and engaging in conversations that promote equity and understanding.
In a society that aspires to progress and justice, it is essential that white people recognize the emotional and psychological toll of such conversations on Black people. To truly advance as a collective, white people must actively contribute to dismantling racism and work together to build a more inclusive and equitable world for everyone while giving tired Black folks a much-needed break.
