Fifty+ Femicides
Raising the visibility of women who were killed by men, after their 50th birthday

Fifty+ Femicides

Every Friday I will write about women in mid or later life who have been killed by a man they are personally connected to. If you do not want to read this content please unsubscribe to the Visible Women Newsletter.

Let me take you back to 5 years ago in the month of July 2019.

6 women aged 50 & above were killed by men. ?

All killed brutally with a knife or by the hands of men they knew, in their own homes.?

Not a stranger in a dark alley.?

Joanna Thompson, 50, died after been strangled and stabbed, suffering neck injuries at her home. She had over 100 stab wounds. Her son admitted manslaughter and was later detained under the Mental Health Act.

Lesley Pearson, 74, was found dead in a shallow grave near her home in Spain on 22 July. She was from England but living in Spain. Her Handyman/gardener confessed to killing her by strangulation and was convicted with her murder. His sentence is unknown.?

Carol Milne, 59, was found dead by her husband, in her home in Aberdeen. She had 33 stab wounds and had been scalded with boiling water from a kettle. Her son was charged in relation to her death and later detained under the Mental Health Act. ?

Layla Arezo, 74, and her husband Akbar Arezo, 64, were stabbed to death in their home in South West London. Their son was charged in to her relation to their death and later detained under the Mental Health Act. ??

Doreen Virgo, 89, was found dead in a care home in Norfolk. She died of compression to the neck, often cause by strangulation or suffocation. Her husband was?charged in relation to her death, but later detained under the Mental Health Act.?

Diane Dyer, 61, died of blunt force injury to the neck and face in South West London. She had 71 injuries. Her male partner was convicted of her murder and sentence to a minimum of 21 1/2 years.?

Mental illness is frequently used as a defence in femicide.

Millions of people who are diagnosed with a conditions related to their mental health, do not abuse, harm or kill.

Misogyny, entitlement and control are at the core of femicide.

*Information has been taken from a variety of media reports, DHR (when published) and the Counting Dead Women Project.

I intentionally do not use the killers name.

Mental health issues are sometimes an " easy go to " to explain why people do some horrendous things. Mental health issues can cause a person to do things they wouldn't do if they weren't assessed as having a mental health issue. And mental health issues or not ,some people are bad people.
