Fifty+ Femicides
Raising the visibility of women who were killed by men, after their 50th birthday

Fifty+ Femicides

For the past 17 weeks I have written this article remembering the women killed after their 50th birthday by men they were personally connected to.

Husbands, sons, brothers, partners, former partners, grandsons.

These 17 articles span between 2014 and 2019. They do not tell the story of every victim.

The method in which the data is published changed in 2020.

This is now published by the annual femicide report, which includes women killed by men they are not personally connected to and the ages of those women are now categorised differently.

I will conclude this series by highlighting some of the key themes for those women who were killed in mid and later life in the current published reports from 2020 and 2021.

Behind every number, is a woman whose loss and suffering for her and those who loved her, will be immeasurable.

2020

  • 110 women were killed by a man
  • 50% of all victims were women aged 46 and above.
  • 20% of all victims were women aged 66 and above.
  • In 65 % (of all killings) death occurred in the victim or suspects home.
  • 52% were killed by a current or former partners.
  • 13% were killed by their son
  • In 45% (of all killings) there was evidence of 'overkill'*
  • The oldest victim in 2020 was 89-years old.

2021

  • 147 women were killed by a man
  • 49% of all victims were women aged 46 and above.
  • 24% of all victims were women aged 66 and above.
  • 53% were killed by a current or former partners.
  • 11% were killed by their son
  • In 74% (of all killings) death occurred in the victim or suspects home.
  • In 64% (of all killings) there was evidence of 'overkill'*

Every woman killed by a man is named in the full reports. For every woman named, there will be many we don't know about, many who's cause of death will be inaccurate or unknown.

*‘Overkilling’ is defined as the use of excessive, gratuitous violence beyond that necessary to cause the victim’s death

*Information has been taken from Femicide Census 2020 and Femicide Census 2021

Unfortunately this article does not shock me, working in this field for decades. Also, as many incedents are not reported as femicide, causes of death are obfuscated and not found to be murder, these numbers stated are likely to be higher.

Thank you for sharing these stories and honouring these women Carrie Bower I know reading the research and writing this also will have been deeply felt by you and you courageously kept writing ???? ?? because we still don’t officially acknowledge those who took their life because of abuse and retraumatisation navigating the CPS and a society that at large doesn’t believe you and those who do don’t have the funding and capacity to support every being who needs them ????

As always thank you for sharing

Thank you for sharing and raising awareness. The figures for completed suicide by women due to domestic violence added to these is also both shocking and very upsetting.
