But first let's look at the?4 F’s of successful performance coaching?- Frequency, Focus, Feedback, and Future-pacing.
- Frequency:?Typically, performance coaching is a continual process and the outcomes can be measured monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually. Frequent coaching sessions are better than one-off annual reviews for both workers and supervisors, atleast , during the initial phase when coaching as a practice is introduced in the organization.?Gallup research shows that People are 2.8 times more inclined to be involved at work if they regularly talk to their managers about their goals. This is why it is recommended to have weekly or monthly meetings with your employees specifically for coaching them and providing feedback. This consistency fosters employee development and offers a clear picture of their current performance level and areas of improvement.
- Focus:?Both managers and employees must be clear on their expectations for successful coaching interventions.?While Setting SMART?goals are great for employee performance management, coaching goals should be agreed with a certified licensed Coach and they should be strength-based along with an accountability plan that can enhance employee participation and is employee centric.
- Feedback:?Feedback is a powerful tool that helps us look beyond our current state and pushes us to grow. As a manager, you can help the assigned coach leverage the?360-degree feedback?method that is used as it considers the observations, opinions, and evaluations of an employee's performance from their peers.?This way any of the competencies , soft skills requirements can be captured especially in the areas of #communication - #connections and #creativity.
- Future-pacing:?Future Pacing is?a technique where the employee, during the coaching sessions, is asked to imagine him or herself in the future in a given desired situation. The given situation being the topic, problem, challenge, or limitation that can be worked with the employee. Performance coaching conversations concentrate on both past performance and future goals of the employee and your business. This helps you build a team of engaged, motivated, and productive individuals who can achieve their personal (soft skills) and professional (hard skills) goals while contributing to your business’ success.?
