The most awaited sporting event, The FIFA World Cup 2022 is a global sensation that has begun to promote growth for various industries in the GCC, including the UAE.
According to an article by FastCompany, “By November, more than one million visitors will enter Qatar for the World Cup, generating approximately $18 billion (QAR 66 billion) for the country” and this certainly means a generous increase in travel within the region.
As Qatar gears up for an overwhelming influx of traffic in the last quarter of the year, UAE is prepared to see many GCC nationals and residents fly out for this event. Additionally, this would also offer tourists in Qatar to find alternate destinations to base themselves for the entire duration of the league. This indicates expected growth in various industries, but primarily travel and tourism, hospitality, and infrastructure for the entire region.
With the easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions, many individuals would be more inclined to visit nearby tourist destinations as part of their itinerary, which would undoubtedly promote further recovery of industries still recovering from the impact of COVID-19.
Local airlines such as Air Arabia, Fly Dubai and Etihad Airlines have already stated that the number of weekly scheduled flights to Doha would increase by at least 3 times to support the air traffic and demands of the season. Several regional airlines are rushing in to meet this demand too.
Hosni Abdelhadi, CEO and Managing Director of Carlton Hotels and Suites, considers the FIFA World Cup to be the most important event of the year.
