Fields/Filters That LinkedIn Offers And Recruiters Use For Search

Let's talk about Linkedin functionality and (recruiter manual/automated AI) search.

When a recruiter is using LinkedIn Recruiter (full version), they can use filters and type in a large number of search terms. (See screenshot above).

Those search terms will be FUNCTIONAL SKILLS. We don't type in soft skills like "servant leader" or "problem solver". Unless a "transferable/soft skill" has a direct correlation to the job we are recruiting for with direct impact (ie "people management") that will never be a search term, and will always need to be contextual, coupled with the functional skills for the specific role.

There are two MAIN areas that you can/should maximize your skills. The first is the list of up to 50 skills you can list at the bottom of your profile:

the second is the section in each job you have had where you pull from that same list for the specific skill used in that job.

And, you can open a specific skill from the job-specific list and then see all the OTHER jobs where that skill is used:

As long as you have these sections fully populated, your profile will pull up in recruiter searches.

Hoping this helps demystify some of the misinformation about how recruiters use LinkedIn's powerful search. If you want to read the article about using search referenced in the cover image: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/leveraging-linkedins-powerful-search-engine-source-your-mihai-arsene/

And yes, searches DO pull from your headline and the about section as freeform.
