A Fieldguide to Humans
39 years is a long time to know a person outside your own family. When I met Phil I was a boy and now I am, ostensibly, a man. He has watched me go through it all. And he has been there for me. This is a portrait of my best friend.
He stood beside me on the field when we graduated high school. Which is where I stood yesterday, watching my own daughter graduate. We both have children who are recent graduates. We’re both dads watching our children bloom.
A good friendship is priceless and I have several of them. I am wealthy beyond calculation. And I have photographed all of my friends, or most of them. And in each photo is a lifetime of gratitude and memories. When I look at this photo of Phil, in front of the Fourth of July bunting in Nicasio, it reminds me of how utterly lucky I am to be living at this place and at this time. I’m not overly patriotic. And I know we’ve done/are doing some fucked up things but I love this country.
Our friends are our most treasured assets. They are the family that you choose. And though he’s rarely on Facebook I say to you Phil, thank you. For everything. You are my brother.
