As fund raisers often, we think that the awards, accolades, brand ambassadors etc are the reasons donors donate to us. Yes, for event specific or short term donor, it could be true but the primary reason why new donors come to support the cause or continue with us, that is because through our cause they find a way to make impact in the communities.
In this perspective, a fund-raiser plays the critical role of a story teller. Sharing with the donors the stories of change, hope and difference that has been made possible through his/her donation. And, these stories do not happen in offices. It happens in the filed or camps or work shops as the case might be. And, in my opinion there is no replacement for a good on-hand experience. Some ways to getting involved in the field could be:
- Volunteer in those activities that we ask our donors to volunteer
- Visit a beneficiaries house, ask him in person how their life has changed
- If animal conservation is your cause, may be meet those animals in person and see how the conservation works.
- Organize a get together for beneficiaries for a change.
These could be some, please add on to it. I guess, the bigger the organisation, the more distant the fund-raisers could get the cause they market zealously.
May your cause be your muse that helps you reach greater heights. Just think how would your donors like when you send your photo with the child whose surgery they supported than just before and after.
Happy Friend Raising to all of you!!
