Fiduciary responsibility
Author Anand Tamboli visited ThoughtWorks MDP office last week and interacted with the developers and the data practitioners. This event was open to public as well so that we got to interact with a wide range of people from the industry. This visit was about his book "Keeping your AI under control".
A lot of light hearted talk happened. Anand's way of delivering the talk without presentations and solely through interactions made it very engaging.
One key take away for me was the term "Fiduciary responsibility" Anand mentioned that there is a lot of things going on to make companies responsible for the data given by the people. In other words, the companies become guardians of data and they cannot sell that for profit. This in turn will put a big check on unethical use of data and its amplification through automations.
The other point which resonated with me was that a lot of people are getting into data practice without getting a basic understanding of statistics and mathematics behind it. When someone in the audience questioned about biases in AI, he promptly pointed out that the basic statistics lessons shows how to remove biases from a sample data. If we build on statistics, then it is easy to remove that bias in automation.
