FRP Grating Types
This article is my second of my series for fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) gratings.
FRP Gratings are typically manufactured via two methods:
1. Moulded
2. Pultruded
However, at Treadwell Group, there is a third option of manufacture termed “moultruded”.
Moulded FRP Grating
The fibres cross-cross each other in moulded grating, highlighting that the strength in moulded grating is demonstrated in the X and Y planes as featured below. This bi-directional spanning ability enhances the performance of this type of grating.
The cross sections of the grating bar can be optimized to I or T shapes to increase the bending strength / weight ratio.
The figure below is an example of augmentation in a T shape grating.
Pultruded FRP Grating
In pultruded grating, there is only a singular direction in which the fibre flows; strength is reduced as a result as loads cannot be dispersed in both directions like in moulded grating. However, the efficiency of pultruded grating is improved verses moulded grating because the fibres are customised in one direction only – creating the ability to span further.
Moultruded FRP Grating
Moultruded grating is the first open mesh grating ever to combine the high performance values of FRP moulded grating with the capabilities of pultrusion. This has been achieved through clever utilisation of pultrusions within the body of the products' load bars and boasts greater amounts of glass that has ever been seen previously.

7 年Great article; simplifying the differences between grating types. The next one should be about the differences between the various resins used in the grating.
