Fiber networks as a strategic enabler.
Technology had been driven by exponential growth where everything is connected, distributed and diverse, all at exponential levels of performance. Then, as one of the most essential network’s values is a set of connections between organizations and/or individuals interacting with each other to benefit the entire group, allowing members to buy and sell products as well as share information; this itself drives the need of process data, set by users and devices added to it, then when “Metcalfe's Law states that the value of a network grows by the square of the size of the network”, networks continues connecting global consumers an exchanging information and services.
The digital business continues to fuel network innovations; IDC estimations are close by 48 Billion connected devices around the globe by 2023. (IDC Global Data sphere), so the fact is: IT and OT teams are reaching a point where a complete extent, as well as network complexity, is challenging the ability to design and manage it.
What is need today to solve those challenges is a different network design architecture thinking as well as assets deployment through the network that combines data aggregation; all those given by the need of higher availability, higher increasing data processing requirements, low latency combined with reliability coming from machine reasoning and machine learning, network automation to facilitate operations and amplify human decision making. To make it more visual, an application example is the latency levels established by GSM for 5G networks set by 1 millisecond; then, data reliability, data traffic raise, collecting and data processing requires fiber networks topologies that support core and edge nodes, where each node is in need of multiple delivery points equals more fiber.
The exploding use of IoT devices, the emerging AI apps, the exponential global data mobile traffic growth, all those expect high performance, reliable and almost instant connectivity, depending on performance as well as capacity given by fiber networks that enable data transmission and data processing from the cloud to on-premises and to the edge of the network.
A new network age is in place when connections between systems, people, locations and devices are getting more complex and spread, then the economic value of the network for any company will increase while including fiber from designing to managing the network would be more strategic.
