Race, Manhood and Power: Commemorating 60 Years Since the Ascension of Malcolm X to Ancestorhood Friday, February 21, 2025 1 to 4 p.m. Winnet Student Life Building Lobby Community College of Philadelphia 1700 Spring Garden Street Philadelphia��s Black communities are facing ongoing challenges��displacement, policy decisions that weaken neighborhoods, and a loss of spaces where Black culture and leadership thrive. To address these urgent issues, WURD Radio presents ��Race, Manhood and Power: Commemorating 60 Years Since the Ascension of Malcolm X to Ancestorhood.�� This live broadcast and event hosted by WURD Radio��s Brother Shomari will revisit the lessons of Malcolm X��s legacy while mobilizing new strategies for Black liberation and empowerment. Serving as a sequel to previous mobilization efforts, the event and related programming will focus on revitalizing and reconnecting African diasporic community-building on campus activism in and around the Philadelphia region. A phenomenal evening of Black activism and essential reading for 2025: On Friday, February 7, leading literary figures convened at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to explore the power of Black writers in combatting hate, extreme anti-intellectualism, and the attempted erasure of Black history and identity. Literary luminary Sonia Sanchez, a leader in the Black Arts Movement and prolific poet, playwright, writer and professor, kept the audience enthralled with stories from her years as a champion of Black arts and Black power through the 1960s and beyond. Sanchez was the centerpiece of a conversation with Harriett��s Bookshop owner Jeannine A. Cook and WURD President and CEO Sara M. Lomax. She cautioned that the gains that she and her contemporaries helped secure are by no means permanent �C but that by forming cohesive, intentional communities and better supporting Black children, we can survive this moment. The event also featured a conversation moderated by WURD host Solomon Jones and including playwright Nancy Marie (Gilliam), cultural writer Tre Johnson, and author and spoken work poet Ursula Rucker. Each spoke about the power of the pen and how all people �C not just professional writers �C can use writing to make their voices hear in the face of persistent denial of racial inequality. A celebration of Black art across the spectrum, this event showcased the talents of Phillly singer Seraiah Nicole and the final days of the exhibit ��The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure.�� ��Phenomenal Black Philly Writers�� curated an essential reading list for surviving 2025.
