FG signs pact with Japan on power supply

Federal Government has signed a grant aid with the Japanese Government for the emergency improvement of electricity supply facilities in Abuja and Nasarawa state.
While signing the agreement on behalf of the federal government of Nigeria, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Sen. Udoma Udo Udoma said that the government of Japan has contributed immensely in various sectors of Nigerian economy in the past, explaining that the current electricity supply project is intended to among other things compliment the country’s effort in guaranteeing steady power supply for economic growth.
“I note with great joy the contribution of the Japanese government towards the development strides of Nigeria through various sectoral interventions, ranging from the health sector to education, transport, water, and agriculture.
“The current electricity supply project by the Japanese government is intended to among other things, compliment the country’s efforts in guaranteeing steady power supply for economic growth.”
Sen. Udoma stated that the project is aimed at installing capacity bank in Apo in FCT and Keffi in Nasarawa state, thereby increasing the power supply in the nation’s capital and neighbouring Nasarawa state. He promised that the electricity facilities if installed will be protected and managed well.
“I am reliably informed that the project whose cost is put at JPY1.3billion has been designed to support Nigeria in promoting socio economic and infrastructural development.
“In particular, the project aims to install capacity banks in Apo and Keffi substations in FCT and Nasarawa state respectively and will contribute to stable power supply, decrease transmission loss and improve system reliability,” the minister said.
In his remark, the Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Mr. Sadanobu Kusaoke, stated that the power sector remains one of the priority areas of Japan’s development cooperation in Nigeria.
He said that the JPY1.3 billion grant will be used to upgrade two substations in FCT and Nasarawa state by preventing voltage drop, reduce power loss and stabilise power supply to approximately 7,000 households in Abuja to attract more investors and residents in the city.
