If you haven't heard the name Captain Tom Moore in the last couple of weeks, where have you been?!
What a guy! I found myself getting quite emotional when I was watching the BBC footage of Tom completing the 100th lap of his garden for the NHS. So inspiring & heartwarming. Made me feel like I can do anything!
£27.6 million raised so far and counting!
I think it's safe to say Tom wasn't expecting that! ??
I was thinking about what Captain Tom has acheived and how it made me feel. The overriding feeling was one of encouragement. I felt encouraged that everything will be okay again. But when I really thought about it, I realised, there are a number of things we can all learn from Captain Tom Moore.
So here are my thoughts...
#1 Do your bit.
We all have a part to play in this situation. We don't need to go and raise millions of £ each but we can all chip in on our own ways. Stay at home, stick to the regulations, keep in touch with loved ones, friends and colleagues and help those more vulnerable than us if we can.
#2 Don't lose your motivation
Whatever it is that you want to achieve or were working towards before all of this started, keep going in any way that you can. Adapt your plan, go at it from a different angle but DO NOT give up! As Captain Tom said to those who are struggling...
"The sun will shine on you again & the clouds will go away."
#3 Push your limits
100 laps of his garden was a challenge for Captain Tom but he chipped away at it one day at a time. If a 99-year old man can have the motivation and determination in him to do that, I strongly believe that no matter how hard things get, we can all get through this one way or another. If you are feeling up to it, why not take some time to think of a challenge you could set yourself during this period of isolation. It doesn't have to be a big physical feat, it could be anything. Big, small, minute - it doesn't matter. If it is a challenge to you, give it a go and hold on to that feeling of achievement when it is done.
Here are a couple of challenges I have set myself during the lockdown. Some big, some small, some tiny.
- Set up and launch my business - HUGE!
- Learn as many new songs on the guitar as I can - small
- Stop having sugar in my Tea! - Tiny (although probably as challenging as the first!) ??
#4 Remember, we've got this
If we all keep doing what is being asked of us - to keep each other safe, we will come out the other side stronger, more compassionate and hopefully, more grateful of what we have. Everybody has different circumstances and some will be struggling more than others but there is an end to this. We've just got to ride it out.
In the words of one of the Cowork Engine members, Liam...
"Every day that you wake up, we are one day closer to this all being over."
Since hearing this, I've reminded myself of it every day.
#5 Be Kind
Captain Tom's decision to walk 100 laps of his garden wasn't to raise £27.6 million for the NHS, his target was to raise £1000! But his character and the nature of his challenge has connected with people from all over the world. Captain Tom's story has encouraged people to donate an insane amount of money to the NHS. These acts of kindness and stories of inspiration send a huge message - sticking together and supporting one another is powerful.
It provokes change, positive change.
