Tuna Book for the photographer Marcus Lyon

These are a few of my favourite things…

Across the years we have contributed to some pretty jaw-dropping work. One of our absolute favourites was the Tuna Book for the photographer Marcus Lyon.

Designed by The Partners this stands as one of the most creative pieces of work we have ever seen. Shot in 1999, it is a photographic journal of the world-famous tuna auction at Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. Other than the incredible images, this book is remarkable because it is masterfully designed to look like a can!

The front and back covers are forged from real tin and embossed to resemble the familiar packaging. The beautiful images were printed as Tri-Tones of two shades of #Pantone Black and a Warm Gray on a bulky 380gsm board, supplied by @fennerpaper. The text was then Matt Laminated and Duplexed to 760gsm to achieve a solid unit and bound with Lay-Flat spreads.

The book was RAM Punched to form the rounded corners, and the edges were sprayed by hand with an automotive aerosol paint bought from Halfords. Bizarrely this was the best paint product we trialled for this application! Finally, the covers were mounted onto the book block to provide a facsimile of a common-or-garden can of tuna. Easy really!

For us, this was an inspirational marriage of photography, design and production. Not surprisingly, the Tuna Book was a revelation in creative circles and highly acclaimed.

Awards included:

  • D&AD Silver, 2001
  • Design Week Awards, Highly Commended, 2002
  • New York Art Directors Club, Gold for Complete Book, 2002
  • New York Art Directors Club, Merit for Book Cover, 2002
  • New York Art Directors Club, Silver Award for Production, 2002

Photographed and Published as a Limited Edition by Marcus Lyon.

Designed by The Partners. Lead Creative was Greg Quinton with support from Dana Robertson, Tony de Ste Croix and Christina Boyes.

Take a bow you guys. This was one of the greats!
