Fertigating Food Crops, Multifunctional Willow & On-Site Zero Discharge Willow Wastewater Evapotranspiration Beds with Liquid Human Excreted Nutrients
To Life! - Small Steps and Small Contributions away from a Metabolic Rift to a Metabolic Shift working 30 years with human excretion in the shape of diverted separately excreted Pee & Poo - human urine and human faeces and to bring them sustainable and safe back to soil and plants in sustainable organic farming. Navigating on a planet with metabolic rifts, environmental crisis, global and local disasters through among others dividing people and soil, town and country and global North and South.
We as human beings ingest matter from our environment, use solar energy to process it, and excrete urine and feces as (waste) products of those metabolic processes into that same environment. Over hundreds of millions of years, coevolution has produced an extraordinary range of complex cycles, in which every species’ excretions are nourishment for others.
Human beings are fully embedded in these life cycles. We inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide; plants do the reverse. We eat plants and metabolize their components into materials we can’t live without, and plants metabolize the leftover chemicals that we excrete
Aiming to show and organize alternative cycles to a robbery system of soil-destroying industrial monocultures producing for distant large cities and poisoning soil, plants and human beings and other living organisms. To cooperate establishing or improving and developing existing cooperation and cooperatives working with Agroecology linking to Sustainable Ecological Sanitation with sanitation producing fertilizer and soil improver.
Fertigating human urine - PeeCycling - Quantity and Quality of human urine as a fertilizer
PeeCycling local human urine to local organic farming in small farms or school gardens in Uganda.
Jerry cans with a funnel and female urinals are introduced as a very simple efficient and affordable way of collecting concentrated human urine without any cross contamination from human faeces. Quantities of human urine available to be collected in a school or at a farm are estimated. Concentrations and contents of nutrients are estimated based on primarily diets. Concentrated human urine collected in Jerry Cans and plastic bottles are after storage applied with or without water with watering cans, Jerry cans or bottles. How, when, how often, concentrated or diluted are presented and discussed due to crop, soil, season, weather etc. Focus was on growing 10 - 15 food crops,

Fertigating On-Site Zero Discharge Willow Wastewater Evapotranspiration Beds with Liquid Human Excreted Nutrients
This is so different from fertigating food crops optimizing use of water and nutrients. The idea is as efficient as possible on as few sqm and with as little storage volumen as possible to grow non food short rotation willow evapotranspirating wastewater and to take up nutrients. Fertigation and distribution can be eg. by pumping subsurface into the bed or by gravity to the bottom.
Very interesting working with this since the establishment of the first known system in 1991/1992 in Denmark.
It is very interesting working developing and as an advicer to authorities and lecturing about those systems in many countries.
The newly built eco-village Permatopia is very interesting combining collecting human urine from 96 ultra low flush diverting toilets to fertigate growing food in permaculture with a On-Site Zero Discharge Willow Wastewater Evapotranspiration Beds receiving greaywater and flush water flushing feces and potential nutrients from human urine not directed to the urine outlet.

4 年May I suggest you folks look into Humaponics as well. This process allows treated urine to become plant usable nutrients instead of becoming ammonia in the soil which takes longer to process and disrupts soil biota. IMHO, although diluted at 10:1, this still might "burn" some plant roots. The great news is that by using the humaponics method with hydroponics apparatus in a 12'x12' area (south-facing glassed-in balcony), I have grown between 40-60% of my annual vegetable needs. That means that if one has access to sunshine...starvation is obsolete! The process is actually very simple and low-tech. All one has to do is store one's urine in an air-tight container for a few weeks. When ready, dilute it 100:1 with water and fertigate soil-based growing as in the article or in a hydroponics set-up.

4 年Great to see the extensive work you have done in this field. Last year, I planted pepper with urine with two of my students and the results were mind-blowing. This year, 10 students have expressed interest in it. They want to try it with different vegetables to see the relative impact. It will be good to point me in a direction where I can get more literature on this. I will share the results with you.

4 年When I worked in the Sahel, the ground would get completely denuded of cover, and the livestock wandered all over looking for food. After the first rain little circles of slightly more energetic plant growth would pop up , showing perfectly where some animal had peed! It was an easy sell to convince the farmers urine is a wonderful manure??
