It was mid-morning on a Tuesday when a Ferrari executive began receiving unexpected messages, supposedly from CEO Benedetto Vigna. "Hey, have you heard about the major acquisition we're planning? I might need your help," one message said. The messages, however, didn’t come from Vigna's usual number, and although the profile picture was different, it still showed Vigna in a suit and glasses in front of the Ferrari logo.
The impersonator continued, asking the executive to prepare to sign a confidentiality agreement. What followed was a phone call with a voice perfectly mimicking Vigna's southern Italian accent, attempting to manipulate the executive into a financial operation involving China. Alarmed, the executive noticed mechanical intonations. "Sorry, Benedetto, but I need to identify you," he said, asking a specific question about a book Vigna had recommended. The call abruptly ended.
This incident highlights the rising threat of deepfake tools and raises critical questions: How did the scammers create such a convincing imitation? And how can you prevent being scammed by someone imitating the voices of your partner, family, friends, or bosses? Discover how to protect yourself against these threats.
The Threat of AI in Frauds
Advances in AI have enabled fraudsters to develop deepfakes and other sophisticated methods to commit fraud. Recently, criminals used voice cloning software to redirect bank funds, a tactic that is on the rise due to the accessibility and precision of these technologies (Deloitte United States) (Built In). According to Deloitte, AI-enabled fraud could lead to losses of $40 billion in the United States by 2027, a significant increase from $12.3 billion in 2023 (Deloitte United States).
The Solution: Establishing a Secret Word
An effective strategy to protect ourselves from these frauds is to establish a secret word with our companies, families, partners, and friends. This simple yet powerful measure can be crucial in verifying the authenticity of communications and preventing scams.
How to Implement It
Artificial intelligence is transforming our world, and while we benefit from its advancements, we must be aware of its dangers. Establishing a secret word is a simple yet essential measure to protect ourselves from the growing risks of fraud. Adopting this practice not only protects us but also strengthens trust and security in our personal and professional relationships.
By taking proactive steps, we can stay ahead of fraudsters and remain safe in the age of AI.
