Feet Matter!

Feet Matter!

The Royal College of Podiatry annual awareness campaign is from Monday 24 April to Sunday 30 April. It’s a time to focus on all things feet!

Each foot is made up of 26 bones, 30 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, all of which work together to provide support, balance and mobility.

I was the 'Foot Physio' for a 5-year period when I worked at Doncaster Royal infirmary in the 1990’s and I can say with some authority that when feet go wrong it’s not funny!

Wellness Wisdom of the Week

Looking after your feet is crucial and specific tailored exercises can make a big difference to pain and problems.

Biomechanics

Sometimes it is 'the way we are put together' or our bio-mechanics that is at the root of a problem.

In this instance corrective insoles may be called for and a consultation with a Podiatrist could make all the difference to your quality of life moving forwards.

This together with a tailored programme of corrective exercises can be a game changer in my experience.

Diabetes also can have serious complications and looking after our feet in this case can be a matter of life and death.

Enjoy a Podcast on me

For this week’s podcast conversation, I am the patient! I took the opportunity to chat with my Podiatrist, Jennifer Blackburn State Registered Podiatrist as she carried out some routine care for my feet. But that is not all she gets up to in her clinic.

It’s not surprising perhaps that she is a firm believer that healthy feet are crucial to our overall health and wellbeing. She doesn’t need to persuade me that looking after your feet is important. But what does that look like?

Checkout this 20-minute conversation tackling top topics to do with feet!

We get to grips with:

? Why it is so important for people to look after their?????feet.

? How to care for your feet.

? Biomechanics and common foot abnormalities.

? Minimalist footwear vs corrective insoles.

? The impact of a leg length discrepancy.

? Diabetic foot care.

My sincere thanks to Jennifer Blackburn, State Registered Podiatrist at Feet Beyond, 509 Newark Rd, Lincoln, LN6 8RT

3 Fun Foot Facts!

1. By the age of one, a child’s foot will already have grown to half its adult size. It will then take until age 18 for the 26 bones in the foot to finish developing.

2. Your feet have over 250,000 sweat glands and produce approximately half a pint of sweat every day.?

3. In flat shoes, twice your body weight will pass through your big toe joint with every step. There are more forces through the foot wearing heels and less if you wear running shoes.?
