Feet and dehydration during Ramadan
Feet and dehydration during Ramadan
Fasting is a fundamental part of Ramadan, but the time you spend without food and without water during Suhoor and Iftar can often lead to nutritional deficiencies, especially dehydration, which has repercussions your skin and body, of which your feet.
Dry or dehydrated skin can be a problem, as it can lead to discomfort, or even pain in your feet, and if not taken care of, it can develop into a more serious condition (Gout for example, a form of arthritis that can cause pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints of your foot, especially in your big toe).
To help your feet cope with this change in your diet, follow in our simple steps to avoid complications, and ensure their health and wellbeing through proper care.
Drinking water. To maintain proper hydration, we recommend drinking approximately 9 to 13 cups of liquid daily. Adequate hydration can help prevent muscle cramps and keep the skin moist.
Exfoliating. By regularly exfoliating your feet with a pumice stone, you can help prevent the build-up of thick, rough skin, and keep your feet healthy and smooth. If buildups occur however, do not attempt to remove them on your own and opt for a medical pedicure applied by a professional podiatrist.
Soaking your feet. A warm water bath for about 30 minutes can be effective after exfoliating with a pumice stone to remove dead skin. You can also add Epsom salts or other nourishing ingredients to the water for added comfort and benefit.
Applying lotion. Applying a moisturizer or lotion with a high lipid (oil) also helps to seal in moisture and help prevent the skin on your feet from drying out quickly. A rich skin cream or petroleum jelly can also help lock in moisture and keep your feet healthy.
Proper skin care is essential to maintain the health of your feet, and taking the time to hydrate and nourish them well will help you avoid complications and keep them happy till the end of Ramadan, and onwards. But always remember, if you begin to experience pain or discomfort, consult out podiatrists lest your condition worsens.
Ramadan Mubarak from the Feetness team.
