“Feels Like” Temperature

“Feels Like” Temperature

On Saturday, Boston, Massachusetts, smashed their record low temperature for the day, getting down into the negative double digits for the first time since the 1950s. In addition, Boston recorded a low of -10 degrees which breaks the old record low for the day of 2 degrees back in 1886.

Bear with me. I promise today’s article isn’t about the weather. Instead, it’s about the phrase meteorologists often use,?“feels-like”?temperature.?Have you ever wondered how the experts measure how the temperature feels?

How do we calculate “feels-like” temperature?

According to a leading meteorologist blog, we calculate a “feels-like” temperature by considering the expected air temperature, relative humidity, and the strength of the wind around 5 feet off the ground (the typical height of a human face). Then we combine our understanding of how heat is lost from the human body during cold and windy days.

It seems weird that we have an accurate and “feels-like” temperature. Why can’t we say if it’s -10 degrees, that’s it, and if there’s a cold wind, you will probably feel colder? Also, what happens if someone is taller than five feet off the ground? One of the criteria used to determine “feels-like” temperature. Does that person’s “feels-like” temperature differ? I’m sorry, but it seems way too complicated!

For a society that is reluctant to share their feelings, expressing one’s feelings has become standard practice when describing the weather. For example: “It?feels?like it’s going to rain.” “It?feels?like it’s going to snow.” “It?feels?colder today than yesterday.”

Expressing our feelings is beneficial. However, most people are reluctant to do so when it matters.

Do you feel uncomfortable (other than discussing the weather) opening up and sharing your feelings? Research tells us that the ability of most people to look inwards and share their feelings is painful.

Just like we are naturally born to breathe, we are naturally born to feel. Therefore, keeping your feelings bottled up inside doesn’t do any good. Thus, attempting to suppress or ignore our feelings can lead to negative and unhealthy consequences.

Sharing our feelings empowers us to connect deeper with ourselves and often improves communication and relationships.

We’ve found a way to share how we feel about the weather comfortably. Maybe we can gradually become more comfortable sharing our feelings about the things that matter in life.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner; maybe that is the perfect day to practice sharing how you?feel?about someone special.
