feelings are like hair blowing in your face

"at first I was mad, then I realized... I get to choose, I can fix this"
We've all felt the warmth of anger wash over us. Of course, that's part of being human. It's normal and expected. And anger can be helpful - it can show us where there's a gap - maybe we need to stand up for ourselves, maybe we need to ask for what we need, maybe we just need to get the energy out.
But what I think is so powerful is that we have the power to choose, change and fix our lives.
So when my client said she at first was mad but then she went to fix it, we celebrated.
Because any emotion, including anger, can be like hair blowing in your face. It obscures your view. And it might take a minute to pull it back. Sometimes it's easier and more helpful to just let the wind blow hair in your face for a moment, until the wind dies down.
But ultimately, just like we have the power to tuck our hair behind our ears, we also have the power to deal with our feelings. We feel them. And then we ask ourselves, what's really going on?
Because when we feel any feeling, it's just a response to our thoughts. So what thought caused that feeling?
Is that thought true? Why or why not?
And what would you rather be experiencing?
What would you have to believe to be true then instead? What thought would you need to be thinking?
And is there any conversation or follow up that needs to happen?
Maybe we just need to feel and talk ourselves through it. Maybe we need to tell someone else what we need.
Because everything we do, think and feel is a choice. Sure, we'll feel mad sometimes, but that doesn't mean we have to stay that way.
