Feeling Stuck in Your Job Search? Here's What You Can Do

You've sent out application after application with no responses.

You've networked until you're blue in the face, but no opportunities have arisen.

You're putting in the effort, but you just can't seem to get traction in your job search.

It's enough to leave any job seeker frustrated and wondering if they're doing something wrong.

The truth is that almost every job seeker experiences points where nothing seems to work.

The job search process can be demoralizing even when things are going well.

So when you hit those rough patches where nothing is happening, it feels exponentially worse.

But there are several constructive things you can do to get yourself back on track:

  • Take a breather. It's very common to get burnt out sending resumes and applications into the void with zero response. Take a few days to recharge - do an activity unrelated to the job search to clear your head. Come back renewed and refocused.
  • Get an outside perspective. Have a friend, career counselor, or recruiter review your resume and LinkedIn to see if there's room for improvement in how you are presenting yourself. Getting constructive feedback can help polish materials that may be getting overlooked.
  • Broaden and vary your approach. If what you've been trying isn't working, it's time to change your strategy. Widen your geographic search, tweak the types of roles you are targeting, reconsider companies you have ruled out, and utilize all tools available, from job boards to recruiter contacts to networking.
  • Reflect on unwanted realities. As difficult as it is, assess whether unrealistic salary requirements, inadequate qualifications, or other dealbreakers are hindering your search and adjust accordingly. A dose of reality may be what it takes to get unstuck.
  • Control what you can control. While you can't make employers respond, you can control the quality of your materials, preparation for interviews, networking contacts, and persistence. Focus efforts only on the things within your power.

The job search process can be long and rocky for even the most qualified candidates. When nothing seems to work, resist the urge to get discouraged. Implement a few of the above strategies to restart a positive momentum in your search.

Consistent effort using a multifaceted strategy is the best path to finding the right fit. With a bit of patience and a lot of perseverance, you can get yourself back on track.
