Feeling Stuck and Unfulfilled? 4 Ways You’re Decelerating Your Career

Ask yourself: Am I genuinely happy with where I am in my job right now? Some – even those working for 20 years in – would say no. Why aren’t you excited to wake up everyday? Why do you feel like you’re not moving forward? The answer – is you.

From my amazing chat with Tori Stevens, she emphasized how many people have the misconception that they’re not responsible for their own lives, letting themselves take a backseat in their career instead. Tori is a career strategist and the founder of evolYOUtion – a company that offers coaching services for people to achieve true personal fulfillment in career and in life.

Here’s how you slow your career down:

You don’t dare to claim your goals

Everything you do goes back to your Why – your impact, your goal. For some, they find it difficult to discover it. For most, they only have a vague picture of it. Why? Ego, says Tori. When you’re pulled back by ego, you don’t allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone.

It manipulates you into thinking that it’s too daring to visualize your dreams, to claim what you’re good at, or to commit to coursing a path for yourself. This is why some have the tendency to leave their self development path to their bosses, “giving their career keys away” and devaluing their worth.?

You don’t build authentic relationships

You have to network like you’re not networking – without any expectations in mind, only genuine curiosity to form real human connections. Don’t just message someone on LinkedIn and send your resume. Talk about their craft, share your motivations, offer your help, talk about books or podcasts, things that actually form a friendship. Some day, it may pay off dividends down the road.

And even if you haven’t seen them in a while, it’s fine because you’ve already built rapport. You’d be surprised how long term a relationship can be if there was a strong foundation from the start. “It's because you add value to my life and I add value to your life, and we keep moving forward,” Tori says.

You think you’re not in charge of your life

Here’s the SYCK truth: You have to realize that you’re the one causing yourself pain, Tori revealed. Why did you never pursue this passion? Why do you feel unfulfilled? Don’t blame it on life, bad luck, or other people. You were always in control of life, not the other way around. “Things don’t happen to me – it happens for me,” as Tony Robbins said. And somehow, you indirectly chose to slow yourself down.

It’s also easy to get caught up in the tangible parts of your life, like your job, title, and your outputs. Overtime, you may have forgotten the more important things – your happiness. So try peeling back all those tangible stuff, then see what you are without those bells and whistles. What are you left with? What do you really want?

You’re too comfortable

After charting your path and reframing your perspectives, you have to see that your plans become a reality. And this comes with some discomfort. Tori recommends to follow these steps:

  • Ask acquaintances how they would describe you if you’re not in the room. This lets you evaluate how others see you, and recalibrate your actions.
  • Update your network. Reignite connections with past advocates by starting new conversations.
  • Embrace discomfort until it becomes comfortable. Ask questions, pitch yourself, listen and raise your hand. “I don't think you should be outside of your comfort zone. I think you just need to make your comfort zone a lot bigger,” Tori advised.
