Feeling Stuck? How to Create a Powerful Vision.

I’ve come to realize that it’s inevitable to feel stuck at any point in your life and career. We can call this the inner “Plateau.”
Well, here’s the silver lining...that stagnancy gives us an opportunity to shift, see the bigger picture, and create a compelling vision.
Experts, researchers.... every guru with a podcast can attest to the fact that we can actualize far beyond what we think we’re capable of when we have a vision.?
Harsh reality is... life can direct you, or you can direct your life.?
Encouraging reality is.... if you’re feeling “stuck” it’s an inner call that there’s something you know you want to be doing, being, or feeling – but just not quite fulfilling yet.
Here's how I've gotten started...
1. GET CLEAR ON WHAT EMOTIONS DRIVE YOU.
Your vision is a function of the heart. Cheesy stuff but true.?
Simply put, we’re emotional beings. Ultimately emotions run our actions.?
Logic comes to play once our emotions have set the scene.?
I’m not gonna play therapist here. I’m just saying we’re emotional, subconsciously run beings.?Feeling stuck?…yep, that’s an emotion. Find the synonym for your “stuck” feeling under “fear.” ??
Acknowledging how to engage powerful and energizing emotions when you're in a fear state or "blah" state is essential in creating a powerful vision.?
Ask yourself:?
We are either pushed by pain or pulled by vision.
To create a vision that will constantly pull you, you get to be clear and intentional everyday. That leads to an exciting and compelling life. A powerful vision gets you out of bed in the morning and can make you stay up late. Eventually there is no “too early” or “too late” once you have a clear vision.?
Once you answer a few of these simple questions, you can start leading your life instead of life leading you.?
2. IGNORE THE REAL WORLD.
We've all heard it before....
'That would never work in the real world.'
This real world sounds like an awfully depressing place to live. It’s a place where new ideas, unfamiliar approaches, and foreign concepts always lose.
The only things that win are what people already know and do, even if those things are flawed and inefficient. Scratch the surface and you’ll find these “real world” inhabitants are filled with pessimism and despair… They assume society isn’t ready for or capable of change."
- Jason Friedman, Rework
Remember, what’s happened isn’t a predictor of what’s going to happen next.
When you’re writing out your vision, make sure it reflects who you really are and what you really stand for.

Make sure your vision prioritizes possibility. Sometimes we create plans that compromise what we really want because it is familiar or limited by what people expect.
Don't conform or appease. There’s no power in that.?
Mute the outside noise.?
Be authentic.
Go big.?
3. THE CALENDAR - ONE DECISION THAT MAKES A THOUSAND.
Simply put, create small steps. Plan backwards. And drop it into a calendar.?
Sounds simple but for some reason people have resistance.?Why??
Calendars can create inflexibility. But that inflexibility also means a powerful sense of COMMITMENT.
Your strategic goals should give this practical sense to your vision. They must also be SMART. If your goals are too large, break them down into bite-sized actions to do them. Doing this will help you move forward easier and maintain momentum.
Ask yourself:
Don’t compromise with yourself.?
Instant gratification is a serotonin booster but a vision killer.?
A powerful vision reminds you to stay on track when things get tough, uncomfortable, or uncertain.?
In most cases, your vision system should also allow for some flexibility and fluidity to allow you to adjust for any impromptu changes.?
In short,?
Your vision will allow you to stretch and grow, and because of this, you’ll start to get a little uncomfortable.?Why? Well, it's bigger than where you are currently in your life.?
These little acts will help you get unstuck and start shifting your focus towards things that really matter to you.
Just saying.

2 年Thank you for sharing your journey Michael Chiang it is very inspiring! I'd like to add that surrounding yourself with people who believe that you can achieve a big vision is key to get you unstuck, move through the resistance, the fear and the outside noise. Having the ability to look inward and check in with our own self, to follow our own instinct is the least logical thing to do, but the greatest path towards personal freedom!

2 年In my previous role at Starbucks, Eyra Colindres pointed out to me that I would often say, "What are you doing and why?" to my team members. It could be in reference to just about anything. Curious of the thought process, probably not always taken in the right way, but my team appreciated my insight and questions overall. ?? When I started to reflect in the pandemic, I asked myself the same question, "What are you doing and why?". It became abundantly clear that the role I was in, I was going through the motions and working hard to be promoted, but in the end, it may not ACTUALLY be what I wanted. I enjoy paving the way, creating something new, setting the tone. Starbucks Reserve Bar with Sandra Roberts, Sean Williams, Miguel Lozano, and Doris Martinez gave me that opportunity. A chance to create something for Starbucks branding and a brand new experience. We broke records and moved what felt like mountains in the customer overall experience. We were sought after as a destination and a place to bring their family. That is what I bring. That is who I am. Creating connection, customer service, and even friendship.
