Not Feeling It?
I have a confession to make.
I wasn’t "feeling" the holidays.
Haven’t put up a tree. Haven’t decorated the house. I even put off getting presents until the last minute.
Then, I realized, I am the matriarch of our family.
It is up to me to create traditions we look forward to that become part of our family history.
So, I announced to my sons and their families that this Friday will be the first annual Christmas Trail Decorating Brunch Party.
I’ve got my Nutcracker jacket, Santa hats, ribbons, ornaments, music and celebratory spirit.
On Friday, you'll find us turning this stream trail in my backyard into a winter wonderland.
How about you?
Not "feeling" the holidays?
One of the most important insights - ever - comes from psychologist William James who said, "Feeling follows action."
If you are feeling isolated or uninspired this season, do something about it.
Don't let dark, divisive events hijack your resolve to celebrate this time of year.
Don’t wait to get in the mood.
Mood follows movement.
Host a potluck for people new to the city/neighborhood who might be alone.
Think of a ritual you can announce and initiate - whether it is one of those card games that facilitates meaningful conversations over meals - or sending notes of appreciation to people who have made a difference for you.
Volunteer at a local shelter or food bank.
Whatever you do, don’t let your feelings run (and ruin) the show.
Do something right now to create the feels you want the people you care about to feel.
Instead of waiting for your holiday spirit to show up, you show up.

10 个月As always, you gave me "food for thought!" My sweetheart, sister-in-law, and I coordinated the Hanukkah party for our community this year! It was grand. Plenty of food, good conversation, and just that sweet, relaxed feeling that comes with knowing that, for the moment, all is well. Now it's on to Christmas movies, riding in the neighborhood to see all the lights, and finally cooking a prime rib dinner for a New Year celebration. Talk about savoring. Doesn't get much better than that, yes?
