I’m writing a book?about Claude Hopkins -?probably the most talented person ever in advertising.

He made millions - but what a rogue!

A while ago Timo?J?ppinen?told me something I knew but had forgotten.?

(Timo?who worked with me for a while?is now Finland's leading direct marketer)

Hopkins made his first money out of two?“medicines” called Liquozone and Dr. Shoop's Rheumatism Remedy.

In those days all sorts of dangerous concoctions were sold to the gullible public?- a?bit like the internet swindles?today.?

Suddenly Liquozone was exposed.?

It?was almost entirely water with a weak solution of sulphuric and sulphurous acid plus?the odd?trace of hydrochloric acid.

Hopkins fled to Paris and?had a nervous breakdown...

I’d forgotten this story?which just?shows I am indeed becoming senile.?

It was in a very good book -"The Man Who Sold America".

That man was Albert Lasker, who made more money in advertising than anyone ever.

But Hopkins made it possible. Just with the power of his pen.

He was so good that by 1918 Lasker used to let him name?his own salary.?

I have been astonished by what I have learned about him.
