If You're Feeling Stuck with Journaling? You’re Not Alone!
Journaling is an incredibly powerful tool for personal growth, but starting can sometimes feel like an insurmountable task, when what you want to feel like is something akin to the image above! Instead starting a journaling practice can be challenging, especially when life feels overwhelming and already full just keeping up with living and all the things that life demands of us.
Many of my clients face this exact hurdle: they don’t know where to start and end up feeling paralyzed. But don’t worry, there’s a way to move past this and experience the incredible benefits of journaling. So many people I speak to find themselves overwhelmed by the thought of putting pen to paper.
Here's Why Journaling Can Feel Overwhelming
Journaling is a powerful tool for personal growth, but it can be daunting. Here are a few reasons why:
The Role of the Subconscious
Our subconscious mind plays a significant role in why journaling can feel overwhelming. When we start to write, we access deeper thoughts and emotions that we might not usually confront. This can trigger the brain’s fight-or-flight response, as the subconscious mind perceives this as a threat to our emotional safety.
Self-Sabotage
The mind's primary goal is to keep us safe and comfortable, and change can be seen as a threat. When we start journaling, we often challenge our current thought patterns and beliefs, which can lead to growth and transformation. However, the subconscious mind might resist this change to maintain the status quo, resulting in self-sabotage. This resistance can manifest as procrastination, fear, or a sense of overwhelm, without us really realising why.
The Power of Journaling
Despite these challenges, deep down we know that journaling can be incredibly beneficial. It allows us to access and process deeper thoughts and emotions, leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth. By acknowledging and understanding the reasons behind the overwhelm, we can take steps to overcome these barriers and start reaping the rewards of a regular journaling practice.
Remember, the first step is often the hardest, but it’s also the most important. Embrace the journey, and trust that each entry brings you closer to greater clarity and inner peace.
