Feeling Miserable at Work?

You're not alone! I felt the same way, not once but multiple times.

For some, their career misery has become too much to handle.

For others, it hasn't yet, but they know something has to change.

Ask yourself these four questions:

  1. Why do you feel this way? Some feel overworked, others underpaid, unappreciated, forced to work on-site, micromanaged, stagnant, unfulfilled, or a combination of these aspects
  2. When do you feel this way? For me, it was every day but on Sunday afternoons, I started to feel anxious, which affected the quality time I spent with my wife and kids with toxic thoughts
  3. What have you done about it? For me, I was keeping it inside because I didn't want to bring that toxicity home and affect my marriage, but I questioned why I was even waking up
  4. What happens if nothing changes? For me, it was affecting my performance, engagement, attention-to-detail, drive, and knew eventually my employer would realize and let me go

Whether this has become too much to handle, or you know you are getting there, I encourage you to do something about it, and see a change, before it is too late.

There's one thing I would encourage any senior tech professional and executive who feels miserable at work to prevent this from lasting unnecessarily long: Timebox your efforts!

For 17 years of my life, I thought I could figure out anything I wanted, and although it's true, we all can, time is precious, and our mental and emotional health can take a real toll on us.

You know how long you can put up feeling this way, so whether you have already reached your limit, or you want to avoid getting there, I encourage you to reach out for guidance.
