Intangible-Unrelatable vs Tangible-Relatable

Be Clear and Communicative

Explain goals and expectations clearly. Example: Don't: Just say "We need to increase sales." Do: Explain "We need to increase sales by 10% this quarter. Let's brainstorm some ideas on how to achieve this together."

Planning a Dinner Party: Don't: Just say "We need food." Do: "Let's plan a potluck dinner party this weekend. Who would like to bring a main course, side dish, or dessert?"

Listen Actively

Pay attention to your team's ideas and concerns. Example: Make eye contact, ask clarifying questions, and summarize key points.

Learning a New Dance Move: Example: Pay close attention to your instructor's cues, ask clarifying questions about footwork, and mirror their movements. Ask for confirmation you have understood the movement correctly.

Empower Your Team

Trust them with ownership of tasks and provide support when needed. Example: Assign a project and offer guidance, but let your team member take the lead and make decisions.

Group Project in School: Example: Delegate research tasks among group members based on their strengths and offer support when someone gets stuck. If you know that Francis hates dates, and John love dates, you know to whom to delegate the chronology of facts research that you need.

Provide Regular Feedback

Offer constructive criticism and praise achievements publicly. Example: Pull someone aside to discuss areas for improvement, and during a team meeting, highlight their recent success.

Helping a Friend Improve Their Photography: Example: Offer constructive criticism on composition and suggest alternative angles. Praise them for creative choices that work well. Make sure your friend understands you're here to help them get better, not just criticize.

Celebrate Wins (Big and Small)

Acknowledge accomplishments to keep motivation high. Example: Recognize both completing a major project and achieving a small daily goal.

Training for a Marathon: Example: Acknowledge completing a long training run and reaching personal milestones, while also celebrating smaller victories like hitting a new pace.

Be Approachable

Create an open-door policy and encourage open communication. Example: Schedule regular one-on-one meetings and be available for questions and concerns.

Planning a Family Vacation: Example: Create a shared document where everyone can contribute ideas and openly discuss concerns about budget or activities.

Lead by Example

Demonstrate the work ethic and behavior you expect from your team. Example: Be on time for meetings, be respectful of others, and be willing to go the extra mile.

Organizing a Neighborhood Cleanup: Example: Be the first one to arrive with gloves and trash bags, demonstrating the importance of your initiative.

Embrace Different Personalities

Recognize different work styles and adapt your leadership approach. Example: Some team members might thrive with detailed instructions, while others may prefer more autonomy.

Playing a Board Game with Friends: Example: Adapt your strategy based on who you're playing with. Some friends might prefer a quick, competitive game, while others might enjoy a longer, more strategic experience.

Invest in Continuous Learning

Always seek new knowledge and skills to stay ahead of the curve. Example: Encourage team development through training programs and conferences, and participate in your own learning as well.

Picking Up a New Hobby: Example: Take a cooking class, watch online tutorials, and practice regularly to refine your skills.

Promote Work-Life Balance

Respect personal boundaries and encourage healthy time management. Example: Lead by example and avoid sending emails late at night or on weekends. Be flexible with schedules when possible.

Volunteering on Weekends: Example: Set clear boundaries on how many hours you'll volunteer, respecting your personal time for rest and relaxation.

So, there you have it! Ten actionable tips to help you become a leader who gets things done (and keeps your team happy!). Remember, leadership is a journey, not a destination. Keep practicing, keep learning, and most importantly, keep inspiring! Now it's your turn! Share your biggest leadership challenge or a "lightbulb moment" you've had in the comments below. Let's keep the conversation going. ??

?? Bonus: if you are not a leader yet, but you are looking for opportunities to "train" and "trial and error", well I just gave you some ideas that you probably did not even consider would have anything to do with leadership. Happy about it?

Thanks Martina Toso for sharing! I would also add, no matter what you do, stay authentic and honest with your team. Acknowledge own mistakes, apologize, admit that you don't know things, ask for advice. Don't be afraid to show that you are just a human ??
