Feeling A Little Well… Burnt Out Lately?

As we navigate living through a systemic crisis and all the emotions that brings up for us, it’s unfortunately common place to find burnout rife. This is particularly true amongst women as McKinsey’s recent report on women in the workplace[1]?revealed that 42% experience burnout. ?

Balancing the urgency of action to address this with personal well-being is crucial if we are going to have the impact we dream of in this important decade and beyond. So, if you are getting a sense that you are heading this way this article is for you! In it I’ll explore 5 effective methods for avoiding burnout.

1.??? Implementing Self-Care Routines: Regular self-care practices are essential. This might include mindfulness exercises, physical activity, or time in nature.

?

2.??? Boundaries: Having clear boundaries is key to avoiding burnout. If you are constantly thinking about the climate emergency and not giving yourself time for activities that help you to relax and live life, you’ll likely be hindering your effectiveness in your important work. Although it feels counterintuitive to take time away that doesn’t directly contribute to tackling this issue, the reality is it is essential, otherwise you risk becoming seriously ill.

?

3.??? Prioritising Tasks: Focus on projects that align closely with your north star; that is, what you have decided to do with the strengths you know you have. This is as much about being clear on what you are not going to do as much as it is about what you will do. Effective prioritization helps you focus on high-impact activities and let go of the expectation you can do it all.

?

4.??? Measuring Progress: Track those tiny steps along the way. Recognizing incremental progress can boost motivation and provide a sense of accomplishment especially key in sustainability, where when there is a serious lack of action over decades by many people in positions of power.

?

5.??? Building a Support Network: Connect with other sustainability leaders. You’re not the only one feeling this way and networking can provide you with emotional support, idea-sharing, and collaborative opportunities that can stop us feeling alone.

?

6.??? Adopt a Growth Mindset: View challenges as learning opportunities and if you FAIL see it as your First Attempt In Learning (FAIL). This perspective can help maintain resilience in the face of setbacks.

Maintaining your sanity and personal sustainability is the cornerstone of being able to have the impact I know you really want without missing out on valuable family time or loosing yourself in the process!

The world needs you, with all your unique perspectives and to bring all that unique brilliance, ideas and skills to the table you need to first work on yourself.
