Feeling Left Behind? Why It's Unfair to Yourself to Compare Your Journey to Others
I believe most of us have been there and some of us are there right now. It's that moment when it feels like everyone you know is succeeding, moving forward, and living their best lives, while you're left feeling stuck and left far behind. It's a really shitty feeling, especially if there was a time when you were the one who was way ahead at one point. I feel this way multiple times per day especially when I see people I know thriving, I'm truly so happy for them but for myself I'm like WTF happened to my life and my trajectory? I can't believe I'm so far behind where I feel I should be right now. What did I do wrong? How did this happen to me? These exact questions are the reasons I practice gratitude every single day.
What's even worse is how easy it is to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others. One never ending scroll through social media seeing our friends posting pictures of their dream lives, perfect relationships, or global travels on private jets, and we can't help but feel like shit and envious in some capacity. Why aren't our lives doing as well or as exciting and fulfilling as theirs seems to be?
People definitely curate their online universe to show only the best, most interesting and most envious parts of their lives. Let's be honest they're probably struggling with the same insecurities and uncertainties that you are, but you would never know it from their Instagram or Tik Tok feeds.
It's always smart idea to pause and take a step back from the highlight reel of other people's lives so you can stay focused on your own journey. Remember that everyone's path is different, and there is no true definitive definition of success. Everything was invented by someone else anyways, so it only matters if you're placing value on it. What should matter is that you are making progress towards your own dreams and goals, at a pace that you feel good about.

If you feel like you're falling behind in your professional life, don't be afraid to ask for help and find new opportunities. It doesn't hurt to refine your skills, do online courses, network with people in your industry and ask for advice from people. Just today I met with a guy named Alex Lieberman over zoom. He founded a newsletter called Morning Brew, I contacted him through this website Intro.co, I paid $300 to ask him how to build an audience for my articles. I had no idea if or what I would get from it but he was super helpful and gave really solid advice on many fronts. I need to keep finding new out of the box ways to keep growing everything I'm doing, today I hit 603 newsletter subscribers. I think wow 603 people I can't believe that's all I'm able to get after 50 articles and I should just quit now but then I remind myself that everyone has to start somewhere and even though my progress is small it's still progress.
My friend David and I were discussing this earlier today, it's tough to see people you know from your past all hitting major milestones while you feel like you're stuck in the sludge or falling far behind everyone else. But it's also important to remember that everyone has their own timeline. Some people get married and start a family in their early 20s, while others may not find their life partner until later in life. I'm in my 40s and I'm still not married, at this point I don't see any need to be married until I have a kid. It's all about finding what works for you.
I've always set a very high bar for myself and while it may look like I'm doing amazing to a lot of people on the outside I feel like I'm so far away from where I expected to be right now. I don't want anyone to feel bad for me I'm just stating my own facts. But for those reading this right now, if you're feeling like everyone is passing you by, please don't give up on your dreams. Keep pushing forward towards your own goals, and don't let the successes of others discourage you. You only need to be right once in a big way and the 10,000 other times you were wrong will become meaningless. One last thing I will share is something I always forget to do but it's important, remember to love yourself and be kind to yourself on your journey.
