Is it possible to earn a great living doing work that you love, create real social impact AND also maintain your sanity in the process?
I truly believe there is space to balance both work and life even as a busy entrepreneur.
Recently, I was interviewed by Tam Luc on her podcast “Superwoman Live”. I am dropping the link to the full podcast in the comments.
Tam is an amazing leader who is high energy and gets stuff done while also making time travel. A lady after my own heart.
She and I share so many core values and perspectives on how to grow as entrepreneurs while preventing burnout.
Tam and I agreed that doing what we love while enjoying the ride requires us to shed that “I’ve got to do ALL the things” mindset that so many of us carry.
If we're on a mission to help everyone and not help ourselves, we help no one.
You cannot bring an empty vessel and then expect to give more.
As women, we are natural givers and natural healers. And, we cannot do everything. A Superwoman knows how to take care of herself, delegate, hire help, and does not try to take it all on.
Tam and I talked at length about this topic and I want to talk a little bit about the economics and the business behind this desire to do it all on our own.
So, first, we create a story.
For example, as a woman, it's cheaper for me to clean my own house and cheaper for me to care for my own mother.
When you break it down, the economic cost of you becoming stressed out, getting depressed and developing a health condition all create a much larger and more costly impact on your family, your community and others around you.
The social costs, the economic cost, and the sum total impact of you not investing in health is bigger than the investment in getting help with the things that stress you out or monopolize your time in a way that does not leave space for joy, family time or self-care.
And, this correlates with business.
It's a vicious trap that prevents you from growing.
You spend all of your time building the funnels, updating the websites, working on the newsletters, billing clients, dealing with calendar issues. And you are tired and spent. Too tired to create value, provide real-time training, get out and speak and serve more people. There is just not enough time to do it all. And then, you criticize yourself because your business is not growing.
Frankly, this is not fair, and it’s not sustainable. It’s also not going to allow you to get to the next level in your business without getting sick.
Instead, think about what are the three things that you are passionate about that are in your zone of genius. What do you need to do, that only you can truly do best? What do you love to do, that lights your fire?
That's what you need to focus on! We get caught up in doing 90,000 other things yet neglect to do the THREE things that we gotta do to succeed because we have a story that we’re saving money doing the other 90,000 things.
And it JUST DOESN'T WORK!
My biggest hurdle for me in my business is trying to build my business while still living my life.
I am figuring out how to be profitable and scalable while still being sustainable because how we do it now is how we do it later.
If we start out really burning the candle and not taking care of ourselves, it's really hard to undo that culture of how we do business. Especially when we are our own boss.
How do I have maximum impact? Show up for my clients with integrity? Get results for my clients, get results for myself and not be a crazy woman?
Motivation and self-care are key.
For me, this looks like
?? Being grounded in my deeper purpose
?? Being really clear on seeing impact and outcomes
?? Spending intentional time with my daughter who inspires me every day
?? Being grateful for what I have and where I am
?? Celebrating the small things and enjoying the moment, even while planning for the future
Lack of joy and pleasure and celebration and not doing things that are fun is NOT going to get you to the next level.
Scarcity and deprivation and being miserable and unhappy and working hard for nothing don't get us there either.
Go to dinner with a friend. Take breaks. Treat yourself! Trust that when you are resourced you are more impactful!
How much of your day do you spend doing what you have to do and how much of your day do you spend doing what you want to do?
And how do you build a business where you are doing more of what you want to be doing?
If you want a clear guide for how to design a vision and a strategy to scale, I created 8 Bold Steps to Scale With Impact and Integrity.
