Inform your discussions and decisions this week.?Yesterday was World Food Day, which promotes awareness of hunger and food insecurity–and demands action around the future of food, people and the planet. In 2023, more than 800m people worldwide faced severe food insecurity, according to the FAO. This statistic has continued to rise due to conflict, climate variability, stark disparities in income levels and more.
Securing access to affordable, nutritious food is a key UN sustainable development goal. Equally, policymakers aim to achieve this while encouraging an infrastructure that safeguards the planet—from production and supply chain to waste management.
"Feeding the future", our new programme sponsored by Lineage, explores how high-quality infrastructure–including food storage and distribution networks–can enhance access to markets and deliver nutritious food. In the global food system, robust infrastructure increases food security and boosts agricultural productivity. It impacts how people grow, obtain and consume food, with positive knock-on effects on health, education and financial security. This is especially true in hard-to-reach geographies.
Also in this issue, explore the benefits of fully-protected marine areas as a key part of the fishing industry and learn about the innovative techniques the food and beverage industry uses to combat supply-chain problems.
