Subject:????Mood Menu: Are You Dining or Whining????

Bad Mood Foods and Healthier Swaps

Eating a bowl of pasta can send you into nap mode while skipping breakfast might turn you into a ticking time bomb. Food isn’t just a belly filler; it's the DJ of our moods. Our brain rides the rhythm of our neurotransmitters (chemical messengers that guide our mood, among other brain functions) that are influenced by what we eat. You've heard that the gut is your second brain, right?

The right foods keep our mood on a high note, while the wrong ones can create mental static. Foods rich in omega-3s, like salmon and avocado, are mood-lifters, but ultra-processed and packaged foods can lead to depression and anxiety ??.

??? Foods for Better Brain Health and Mood

Avoid processed and fast foods and consider these feel-good food alternatives:

  • Fatty Fish ??: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids for better brain function, mental health and combating depression. They help build brain and nerve cells, enhance learning and memory.?Wild caught is best. Refer to the chart in my book “Wellness 101: Simple Steps to Good Health” for the best fish to eat.
  • Nuts and Seeds ??: Excellent for vitamin E and omega-3, protecting the brain from oxidative damage, potentially delaying cognitive decline as we age.?
  • Berries ??: Packed with flavonoids and antioxidants like vitamins C and K, they combat oxidative stress and inflammation, potentially improving communication between brain cells.
  • Leafy Greens ??:?Spinach, kale and other greens are loaded with folate and B vitamins, which are fundamental in preventing brain atrophy and enhancing memory and focus.
  • Whole Grains ??:?Contain?complex carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamin E, which provide a steady supply of energy to the brain and support overall brain health.
  • Avocado ??:?Its monounsaturated fats promote healthy blood flow, reducing blood pressure and supporting brain function.?
  • Beans ??:?A balanced source of protein and fiber ensuring a stable glucose level, essential for brain energy and mental clarity.
  • Dark Chocolate ??:?Rich in flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants, which may boost mood, improve blood flow to the brain, and enhance cognitive function.
  • Yogurt & Fermented Foods????:?Probiotic-rich foods promote gut health, which is intricately tied to mood and brain health.
  • Turmeric ??:?Turmeric's active ingredient, curcumin, has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, promoting better brain function.
  • Green Tea ?? :?Its duo of caffeine and L-theanine can enhance brain function, reduce anxiety and improve mood.
  • Coffee ?:?A well-known stimulant, it not only wakes you up, but can also improve mood, memory, and mental function.

?? 5 Bad Mood Foods With Healthy Alternatives

Alcohol ??: Too much can lead to mood slumps.?

Alternative: Limit your intake to no more than 1 or 2 drinks per day. Try substituting non-alcoholic options like kombucha,?non-alcoholic beers and wines, herbal teas, sparkling water with a twist of lemon, lime or a few berries, mocktails (non-alcoholic beverages that mimic the taste of traditional cocktails), coconut water, cold brew or iced coffee, apple cider or vegetable juice cocktails.

Cocktail Mixers ??: Sugar-laden mixers lead to energy crashes.Alternative: Skip mixers for healthier alcohol choices like vodka with soda water and fresh lime juice.

Non-organic Produce ??:?Expose you to neurotoxins affecting mood. Chemicals in pesticides have been found to affect mental health as well as cause nutritional deficiencies, particularly in minerals, which are essential for keeping moods in check.

Alternative:?Only buy organic, especially the dirty dozen (see my book, "Wellness 101: Simple Step to Good Health" or visit?ewg.org). Shop at local farmers markets.

Margarine ??: Harbors inflammation-stoking fats disrupting mood.Alternative: Opt for grass-fed butter or use ghee for high-heat cooking.?Ghee offers dairy nutrition, but?may be free from dairy sensitivity risk as it is a lactose and casein-free dairy oil.

Deli Meats ??: Often packed with fillers and preservatives causing mood swings.?

Alternative: Choose brands without fillers or roast and carve your own meats for a budget-friendly choice.
