??FeedFORWARD: giving feedback that inspires positive action. Feedback is outdated.

Do you want to get honest feedback?

Do you want to INSPIRE others when you give advice?

No More Dwelling on the Past – It’s Time to Create the Future

Ever get feedback and feel like it’s a punch to the gut?

Or maybe you’ve held back on giving feedback because you didn’t want to hurt someone’s feelings?

Well, I’ve got a game-changer for you.

New Lingo Alert ????

FEEDFORWARD

I came across this concept in Marshall Goldsmith ’s book, “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful.

He introduces the idea of FeedFORWARD – a way to ask for feedback that’s future-focused, constructive, and, a lot less awkward!

Instead of asking, "What did I do wrong? OR What could I have done better?" you ask, "How can I do better next time?" It's like upgrading your feedback to the 2.0 version.

Here’s a more specific example:

You say: "I want to be a better listener. Could you give me two ideas I can use in the future to help me become a better listener?"

See how that’s a lot more positive?

It's not about what went wrong in the past; it's all about how you can improve going forward, which is THE ONLY thing you can control at this point.

Why I ?? Using Feedforward

I use feedforward when I'm working on my public speaking. I ask after events:

"What’s one thing I can improve for my next presentation?"

Then, here’s the magic part – I shut up and listen. No interruptions, no defensiveness, no “Yeah, but...”. Just a simple "Thank you."

The key to Feedforward is letting the other person feel comfortable sharing their advice.

If you argue or get defensive, they’ll hold back next time.

So, just ??zip it and appreciate it!

Why Feedforward Works

Feedforward focuses on the future.

It’s about taking a better swing the next time the ball comes your way. It's not about fixing what’s already done, but about how you can create a better future for yourself.

Here’s why it works so well:

  • It removes the negativity that typical feedback can bring.
  • You don’t take it personally because it’s about future actions, not past mistakes.
  • There’s no defensiveness or resentment—just pure positivity about how you can improve next time!

Coaching with Feedforward

In coaching, we’re trained to not dwell on the past.

Instead, we ask questions like, “What are two ideas you might have to handle that situation better next time?”

It’s all about getting closer to your aspirations by making small improvements with every step in the future.

And here’s the best part: you can put systems in place to make sure those improvements actually happen!

The Ground Rules for Feedforward

Ready to try Feedforward for yourself?

Here’s the only rule you need to remember:

You are ?NOT allowed to judge?, critique, or even comment on the suggestions you receive. You can't even say, "That's a good idea!"

The only thing you're allowed to say is, “Thank you??”

That’s it.

Simple, right?

It might feel strange at first, but it works.

Let’s Focus on the Future

The past has passed.

Let’s shift our focus to how we can all be better next time.

No shame, blame, guilt and finding whose fault it was.

Next time you’re thinking about giving feedback, try Feedforward instead. You might just find that it’s the secret sauce to a brighter, better future TOGETHER without resentment, defensiveness and grudges.

Deploy & Enjoy,
