Could you help me?
I am collecting examples of significant pieces of feedback that have influenced people’s lives. I am planning to analyze these examples to better understand the elements of impactful feedback. I am also planning to use them as suitable scenarios for training, role-playing, and assessment.
Your examples may reflect different types of feedback such as evaluation, training, reward, or punishment. They may involve different sources of feedback such as managers, colleagues, customers, friends, enemies, or significant others.

Here’s an example from me: Long time ago, I attend a seminar on programmed instruction conducted by an international expert. At the end of the day-long seminar, I got into an argument with the seminar leader about the use of programmed instruction for second language teaching. In those youthful days, I had eidetic memory and reeled of details of the researchers, journals, titles, and page numbers for locating the original research. The seminar leader probably thought I was a smart aleck who made up fake information just to impress people. The next day, he went back to his university in the United States, and I returned to teaching science to my high school students in Madras, India. A week later I got a cable from Dr.?Douglas Ellson, the seminar leader. The message was succinct: “You are right. I am wrong. Would you like to be my Research Assistant?” With that piece of feedback, my life changed radically. I ended up at Indiana University.
Here's an earlier example: I finished my Sixth Form science test in 15 minutes and turned in my answer sheet. Without reading the answers, my teacher immediately gave a big zero as my mark. He was convinced that anyone who turns in the answer sheet for a 2-hour examination in 15 minutes must be a dunce. Later, I found out that all my answers were correct. This piece of feedback radically changed my academic behavior. If I complete a task rapidly, I wait for the duration that normal people would require before turning in my response.
Your turn now. Please provide some feedback examples from your life in the “Comments” section below. Thanks.

3 年( manager hand me a check for $1000, and tell me it was because I was doing a good job. I tried to get some feedback on what I was doing well and he had no specifics. ) I wish I had a manager ( client now, since I am a freelance trainer ) who calmly hands over money like this ( Rs 80K in Indian currency , this $1,000 !!! ) when ever I ask for feedback ! What do I do with ' Constructive Criticism ' if that doesn't translate into money ? I think I will be happy with $1000 , than any ' constructive critique ' in response to my seeking feedback ! LOL ! Just kidding sir !

3 年I once had a manager hand me a check for $1000, and tell me it was because I was doing a good job. I tried to get some feedback on what I was doing well and he had no specifics. I had no idea what that money was supposed to motivate me to do. I have tried to remember that when giving feedback I should have specifics for the person so they know what’s expected and where improvement is needed.
I’ve seen a lot of great ideas for how to give feedback to people who are interested in learning a subject. Any thoughts on how to give feedback to performers who are highly resistant or very fragile?
I died once. After the Doctor revived me he said, “Don’t do that again.” Then he suggested I lose some weight and get more cardio exercise. I did. So far so good.
