Feed for thought

Improving the emissions from the feed we give to our farmed animals can have a great impact. The government's mission on sustainable feed is an opportunity to generate a collective drive to make some changes. Innovation is important, but collaboration is most essential.?

The targeted mission on sustainable feed was discussed in a webinar on Monday; rewatch it here.?

A mission for sustainable feed

Einar Wathne says that focusing on feed can quickly bring about change and provide beneficial outcomes. Feed makes up a significant amount of the salmon's footprint.

The Norwegian government has made sustainable feed one of two missions in the coming years. In a new report submitted to the authorities, a cross-sector group proposes goals and organisational structures going forward.?

I believe that the social mission has such a broad approach that it can have the ability to make something happen. And that we will be able to deliver results quite quickly. Within five years, we will see significant results in emission reduction, Wathne says.?

But he emphasises that we are dependent on one thing if we are going to succeed.

Crushing mussels to make chicken feed

If they get the results they hope for in the BlueMusselFeed project, chickens in Norway will consume blue mussels through their feed.?Ocean Forest AS is one of the partners in the project, and as of now, they are working with mussel processing.?

When processing mussels, the soft and hard part must be separated – in other words, they must be crushed. Next, protein liquid is separated from the shell parts and the water content is reduced. Eventually, they obtain a mussel mass, which is then preserved with acid to create a liquid mass/silage, Anne Sophie Gerhardt, project coordinator at Ocean Forest AS, explains.

In addition, we extract the shell fraction, which is made durable by drying it.

As always, innovation is difficult, and they have encountered several challenges in the process.

Future feed ingredients

Did you know that less than 1 % of the current feed mix comes from what is supposed to be sustainable novel ingredients? While novel feed ingredients cannot meet the need alone, this is an area where growth is possible.?

A list of potential feed ingredients can be found in our Industry Insight: Future ingredients for Norwegian salmon feed.?

The report identified blue mussels and photoautotrophic microalgae as the two ingredients closest to industrialized production. Also, novel marine ingredients, insects, and microbial ingredients have potential in the long run. That could also be the case for land animal by-products, a more controversial ingredient.?
