Feed Forward
Yes, not feedback but feed forward.
Why? Due to a very simple reason.
It gives you information about what you can improve or shall not repeat. It gives you data that you can use in your own benefit.
Yet, we shy away of asking how our presentation, our talk was. Because we are afraid of getting hurt, we are afraid of critics.
As humans, we want to be praised all the time, we want to hear how well we did. Is this realistic, I would like to ask you? Can we do all the time, the best, the extraordinary, deliver the best talk, don’t do any mistakes, or don’t forget anything?
Realistically this is not possible. We are humans and we are allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. We are allowed to forget or be not at our best mood.
This is natural and we shall be proud of our flaws.
Important is that we learn from our experiences and either change or try another way.
As my motto: Try Fast, Fail Fast and Learn Fast.
Thus, feed forward is an important ingredient for success. Asking for it consciously and taking it not personal, however taking it for you as data to process and do the better next time.
Feed Forward is not against you. It is a constructive suggestion and comment.
It brings you one step forward towards your goal, your improvement. Gives you a different perspective that you might not have thought of before. We all have blind spots.
It is worth asking for a different opinion or a different view.

Dare to ask. It requires courage, I know. And the vert first time is difficult. However, the more you do, the more you get used to it and it becomes a natural behaviour to ask. The more you ask, the more you learn and improve.
Beside getting feed forward, we shall as well give feed forward.
How can we give feed forward with a positive spin? One great framework is the sandwich model.
What is the sandwich model?
1.??????Step one: Praise. The conversation starts with positive feed forward
2.??????Step two: What the person can do better to b more effective. The actual message you want to convey.
3.??????Step three: Praise. Lastly, the conversation ends with another section devoted to positive feed forward.
Finally, some good feed forward examples for leaders:
Unfortunately, the marketing materials that were recently mailed had the wrong logo. I understand that digital assets can be hard to manage but I thought we had a clear process in place. I’d like to get your perspective on how the mistake happened and how we can avoid it in the future.”
“You are one of our top salespeople and your results are always excellent. Recently, however, I noticed a decline in your numbers. I was wondering if there is a reason for the change and if there’s anything I can do to help you be successful.”
Enjoy asking, receiving, and giving feed forward.?

2 年I love the way you framed it, Hulya Kurt: feed forward. The objective is improve the future instead of blame the past (but learning from it).

2 年Try Fast, Fail Fast and Learn Fast. Absolutely Hulya Kurt. The sandwich technique is my favorite. For many years I worked with teenagers and I had to be carefuul/caring with my feedback and I started to use it back then.

2 年Great tips! I often use this kind of a model when auditing my clients' content strategy. It's important to acknowledge what's been done right before coming in with suggestions and it creates a realistic context to the feed forward!

2 年One thing I learned in coaching engineers is that the use of engineering terms for explaining communication concepts may lead to a situation where the client with an engineering background (but not only) will try to accurately replicate the engineering concept to the details of the situation as they perceive it. The risk for the discussion is to shift into a mini-engineering course delivered ad-hoc by the Client. Instead of drawing UNDERSTANDING or MEANING from the client, we may just draw COMMON TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE with little relevance for the mindset shift they want to do. An engineer will always be ready for dozens of technical explanations, and a wrongly used example of a metaphor can mean the end of the trust they put in us as their coach. End of the game before even starting. What is your experience, Hulya Kurt?
