FedTalks 2023: A Glimpse into the Future of Federal IT

Highlights from FedTalks 2023 by FedScoop: A Glimpse into the Future of Federal IT

Attending FedTalks 2023 has been an illuminating experience. As a senior federal IT manager, I found myself immersed in insightful conversations, keynote addresses, and panel discussions that shed light on the trajectory of IT within the federal landscape. I'd like to share some highlights and takeaways from this incredible event.

1. Embracing Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA)

The federal IT community continues to prioritize cybersecurity. This year, ZTA emerged as a crucial theme. Leaders emphasized its importance in an increasingly complex digital landscape, marking a shift from perimeter-based defense models to a more dynamic, holistic approach.

Drew Myklegard from OMB, an agency I have worked with extensively, highlights Zero Trust implementation here:

2. Intra and Interdependencies across agencies

Federal agencies are exploring partnerships with industry leaders to tap into cross platform work, to identify and improve on dependencies within and amongst multiple agencies. For example, Social Security and Department of Veteran Affairs are interdependent for a veteran to receive disability payments.

Ann Dunkin touches on the challenges faced by Department of Energy here:

3. AI and Ethical Considerations

The potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is enormous, but with it comes ethical considerations. Discussions revolved around ensuring AI systems' fairness, accountability, transparency, and safety. The message was clear: technology should serve humanity without compromising values.

4. Remote Work and Digital Transformation

The post-pandemic world has shown that remote work is here to stay. Panelists discussed best practices for digital transformation, emphasizing the importance of agile frameworks and citizen-centric services.

5. Investing in IT Talent

The talent shortage in IT is a pressing issue. Solutions discussed included apprenticeship programs, public-private partnerships, and more inclusive hiring practices to ensure the federal IT workforce reflects the diversity of the nation it serves.

6. Sustainability and Green IT

Sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's a responsibility. There was a call to action for IT leaders to advocate for green technologies, promote energy-efficient data centers, and consider the environmental impact of our digital footprints.

Andrea Barton from Department of the Interior talks visionary leadership and #smartParks #augmentedreality ideas

7. Data Sharing and Interoperability

For federal agencies to be effective, they need to communicate seamlessly. This year, there was a strong focus on ensuring systems' interoperability, emphasizing data standards, and fostering a culture of collaboration.

8. The Importance of Digital Literacy

In a world where technology is omnipresent, the need for digital literacy is paramount. It's not just about knowing how to use technology but understanding its implications. There were calls for investing in training and education programs at all levels.

One of the most animated speakers, Andre Mendes, CIO of Department of Commerce, said "Government agencies should rely only on technology that commercial organizations have developed with minimal to no customization rather than building their own."

In Conclusion:

FedTalks 2023 offered a glimpse into the future of federal IT, highlighting challenges, opportunities, and the path ahead. As we navigate this ever-evolving landscape, it's essential to remember the core principle: technology should empower and serve citizens, making their lives better and our nation stronger.

Thank you, FedScoop, for organizing such an enlightening event. Looking forward to FedTalks 2024!

Hi, Anu. Appreciate the summary here. The "Sustainability and Green IT" statement caught my attention. Do you have more information on how agencies are reducing their digital footprints and what priority that is taking? Thanks in advance.
