Federal research project shows that 3D printing is possible for mass production in the automotive industry

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports several projects within the framework of the "Photonic Process Chains" funding initiative. In the research project "Integration of additive manufacturing processes in automotive series production - AutoAdd", which is coordinated by Daimler AG, the project partners have come to important conclusions according to a press release from the Fraunhofer ILT.

The integration of the metal laser powder bed melting process (LPBF or DMLS for short) could significantly reduce unit costs in automotive series production. Daimler AG had already planned large-scale production with 3D printers last year and had previously used 3D printers to manufacture spare parts.
