Federal Narrative Misses the Mark Amongst Educated Audience at the WPC
I spent the past few days at the World Petroleum Congress – which was held in Calgary this year, for the first time in 23 years.? It was fascinating to discuss issues – macro and technical – regarding the energy industry’s path towards more environmentally friendly production, and delivering continued secure energy in the world for the foreseeable future.?
This is the social contract shared by all those present – meeting the world’s needs while ensuring we are addressing our environmental footprint.? World leaders, Ministers from many jurisdictions, company leaders, and technological experts – all providing informative input.?
The one ‘lead balloon’ was the commentary presented by Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources – which was roundly criticized by all participants as being tone-deaf, ill-informed, and a clear example of political capture by self-interested propagandists.?
Thankfully, Premier Smith’s follow-on remarks showed her to be a well-informed and advanced voice for the solutions the world needs.? The contrast in messaging between our federal representative and our provincial leader was stark.? This was a very well-informed global crowd, focused on delivering energy and environmental solutions to the world. Propaganda doesn’t cut it with this audience.?
I think Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources left with a taste of what it’s like to deliver aimless narratives to an educated audience.? I hope he takes it as a great learning moment, and not another point of division for Canadians – between those finding real solutions and those spouting empty words.
One speaker summed it up well:? “When all is said and done, there is always more said than done.? Our job is to get things done.”? I agree.
Thanks to all those with whom I had great discussions – new contacts and old.? I’m enthused about the solutions you are presenting to the world.? I share your approach to inspiring new leaders.

1 年WPC went very well. Contrary to Minister Wilkinson remarks. Contrary to PM Trudeau ‘make a business case’ when the Prime Minister of Japan and Chancellor of Germany were in Canada to do business. The world wants Canadian resources and expertise. The climate activists running the Trudeau Government do not want that. Any wonder Canadian productivity and wealth are lagging.
