Without a doubt each and every one of us will have heard about one, if not both of two things within the news recently: gas and oil prices and Russia. Today we are taking these two pertinent topics and merging them into one commercial news story so to report on the UK and the US banning Russian oil and gas imports.?

With the plan being to ban all imports from the nation by 2023, both the United Kingdom and the United States of America took the decision to make such a move following the recent Russian invasion of the Ukraine as a form of punishment for Russian leader Vladimir Putin. With a total ban of imports from the nation, such sanctions are expected to severely damage the Russian economy, with an oil ban from solely the UK having the potential to cost Moscow over £5 billion in just one year. Speaking publicly, President Biden announced that ‘by targeting the main artery of Russia’s economy,’ the American people ‘will deal another powerful blow to Putin’s war machine.’?

Alongside these two powerhouse nations, the European Union has also put forward plans to phase out their gas imports from Russia. Despite this only consisting of a withdrawal from Russian gas, the EU currently sources 40% of its overall gas supply from Russia and so this too could be potential devastating blow to the Russian economy.?

Following such a decision there has been a recent surge in the prices of fuel within the UK, with petrol now costing a record 155p per litre (24% higher than last year). Statistics presented by analysts suggests that this proposed ‘difficult and expensive transition could push Britain into recession,’ however UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has assured that the new transition to alternative gas and oil suppliers would be a ‘smooth process’. Johnson has stated that ‘we can certainly do it … in a way that doesn’t disrupt supply, that ensures we have substitute supplies on stream in an orderly way and in a timetable that won’t affect UK business, won’t affect UK manufacturing, road haulage or other parts of our industry but will punish the regime of Vladimir Putin.’

Despite there being little clarity in what the future holds in terms of the British economy, the one certainty is that British Chancellor Rishi Sunak will soon likely face significant pressures to protect British consumers from an increased cost of living.?

At The Legal Brief, we are passionate about connecting our network with fantastic opportunities. We are also very aware that we have a highly skilled, educated and diverse network, who may also be connected with worthy causes to great effect - Ukraine Legal Aid is one of these causes.

Right now the need is for attorneys that have done asylum / immigration work, but anyone willing to provide pro bono legal services (attorney or non-attorney) should sign up because they will need as many volunteers as possible to address the volume of work that will need to be accomplished. Numbers are being quoted that hundreds of thousands of people will need aid and support, so the bigger the database of volunteers they can build, the better.

If lawyer's / firms want to help they can visit the website we just set up and fill out the form to register:?https://ukrainelegalaid.org/

Marks and Spencer have announced a new partnership with The Early Learning Centre, which will see the latter's products appearing in M&S stores, as part of a plan to increase the popularity of the retailer with Families.

M&S have seen a recent period of growth, partly down to similar deals being made to house other external brand within their stores, with Nobodys Child (Fashion) being another brand they have recently announced a partnership with. They have already been selling Clarks (Shoes) and Seasalt (Women's clothing) on their online store, so it reasonably to think these brands may also soon be available in High Street stores.

Director of Brands, Neil Harrison, has said “We know a large proportion of our customers look to purchase kidswear and toys for family and friends. So, by bringing the Early Learning Centre brand – with fun and interactive experiences – to our stores, we’re able to give our 22 million customers more reasons to shop with us,” He also mentioned the desire for M&S to be more relevant more often to families.

This could certainly help M&S in their attempts to recover some market share and drive footfall through their, often high street based, stores, at a time when high street footfall still hasn't fully recovered from the events of the last couple of years.

It is a move, however, that some may suggest should be taken with caution. There is a risk, if too many external brands are included within M&S stores, that the brand will be seen more as a department store, than a food retailer. This may not sound like a big deal, but department stores aren't popular at the moment with consumers, and more importantly are not seen as a good area for investment in the current climate.

There is a chance that perception of being a department store might leave investors thinking that share price, and the Price to Equity ratio, are too high compared to other department stores, which tend to have a lower PE Ratio than traditional retailers and supermarkets. This could discourage investment in M&S, and subsequently drive the share price down. As such, should further external brand be taken on, it is reasonable to think that M&S will be keen to ensure that consumers know they are still a traditional grocer / general merchandiser at heart - maybe we will see more sumptuous food adverts over Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross" in the coming months.

Potato prices are expected to go up over the coming months, with the average "spud" set to cost up to 20% more.

Obviously, with the number of products containing potato the average household consumes, this could have quite a large effect on the expenditure of the average consumer, however the problem lies much deeper than that.

The price rise is being caused by a fertiliser shortage, forcing farmers to pay higher prices for fertilisers, and as such, force them to charge more for the end product. This should cause concern on a number of fronts.

Firstly, an increase in Fertiliser price should, in theory, have an effect on more than just potato prices, with all vegetables likely to be affected. This could push food prices up further again.

Secondly, this could have a damaging effect on the already struggling agricultural industry, as supermarkets are likely to try and squeeze the price they are paying down as much as possible, possibly reducing the profit margin for cash-strapped farmers. However, there is only so much that prices can be squeezed, as no one can afford for farmers to go out of business. We are seeing a pattern emerging through the threat of global war which, in a similar way to previous wars, is seeing nations strive to be totally self-sufficient, should a time come when importing becomes impossible. To this end, we need our food producing organisations, and the farmers that grow the core products, to be thriving.

With consumer spending continuing to rise, this development does highlight once again the need for measures to be put in place to help both the farming community, and the consumer as, should these prices trends continue, it will soon be unaffordable for at least one end of the production line. With Bentley announcing a 39% increase in sales yesterday, it is clear that there is still money in the country, it might just be a case of working out how to ensure that some people don't run out of money, whilst some are still able to spend axtravagantly.
